I am looking for dramas that present unique aspects of Japanese culture. For instance, with the school dramas I learned about how competitive it is from an early age (multiple JDramas). I also enjoyed Shota no Sushi because it gave me insight into how the sushi shops operate and how seriously they take it. Same for the Anime Welcome to the NHK!... it taught me about the Hikkomori <sp> aspect (I didnt know this existed). I guess I am looking for more of a slice of life type show that deals with an interesting aspect of the culture (Im having a hard time describing what im looking for Bang Head )
I have 49 dramas in my collection and this will be the magical 50th! Recommend a good one for me! Big Grin

Slice of life dramas:

Sweet Home - illustrates the competitive nature of the Japanese educational system from an early age in the parents' goal to find a prestigious school for one's children in order that the kids will have a bright future.

Dinner on Thursday and/or Double Kitchen - in the early 90s in Japan before the bubble economy burst it was all the rage to built "two-family" housing....one generation would live on one floor and then when their kids got married they could occupy the other floor so they could live together.

All 3 are comedies and 2 star Tomoko Yamaguchi....one of Japan's most popular TV actresses of all time....sadly she is now retired...but still one of the best, and much better than most of the actors out now.

No problem...I'm sure there are other shows in the slice of life category but those were the ones that came to me right off the bat. I hope you enjoy them.

Ah, Triky beat me to the punch... I haven't seen the other two, but Double Kitchen is a winner, if you can deal with the pain-in-the-ass mother-in-law stereotype plot... Yamaguchi Tomoko is incredibly spunky and feisty in this role. Victory! Peace!

You should watch the other two...they're funny....ask Geezer. My optical drive has been unstable for a while...I've been too lazy to replace it.

Sweet Home and Dinner on Thursday are worthy of watching.

Sweet Home is one of the best satirical looks at Japanese society I have seen. Sharp writing, a terrific cast, and two of the best performances you'll ever see from Tomoko Yamaguchi as a naive mother who gets sucked into the ultra-competitive school-selection war zone and Yoko Nogiwa as the George Patton of kindergarten cram school teachers.

Shin2 stated it eloquently re: Sweet Home but Dinner on Thursday is another great dorama from the early 90s, as is Double Kitchen which deserves the high praise of Geezer and others.

I saw Double Kitchen a long time ago and I remember liking it. It was so long ago though so I cant remember anything except for evil Nogiwa Yoko with the drum beating and the noodles going down that slide thing. hehe
