u all have listed most of the tings i like abt jap drama

1. pretty girls ... even extras are pretty. in which other country can u get this
2. short. 11-13 episodes makes me miss no episodes n when i do, i get really pissed. american dramas are great, their ideas, plots n filiming techniques break new grnd yearly but i wont die if i missed an episode of ONE season. the onli american show im glued to right now is ER. hongkong dramas are not bad sometimes but they show at a bad time slot (ie my studying time) n they tend to be less innovative. and they have less pretty gers.
3. themes. u all are right, most jap drama have likeable characters in which they are determined to achieve their dreams in life. in particular, i like nagase tomoya's roles in yanpapa & mukodono! they convey a lot of desirable values tat i wld like to see in my self. I think its true tat someone who loves jap dramas can not have a bad character as it wld totally be not in sync with wat u watch. They try to teach u all the right things in life
4. cinematography. although not equal to american shows, still the best in this side of asia. hero is a great example to me.
5. i like a lot of things japanese.
6. i have to say this again. PRETTY GIRLS

Same here. I can't keep up with all the political interactions on The West Wing, yet the show fascinates me...

My reasons I watch JDorama:

1)Pretty Asian Girls - I will admit that I have stopped watching a drama just because the lead female wasn't pretty

2)To Learn Japanese - Anytime I can be exposed to the language increases my chances of learning it (in theory )

3)To tell Anime fans Japan makes other TV shows besides Anime - I think half of them are unaware of JDorama

Hey Poochie, It's so funny I was about to post the same question. For me, same with you, I like the message they send to the audience. And of course, the cute Japanese actress are another reason why I watch JDrama.

Drama's from here get boring and have like the same plots happening always, along with the same clichés. As in Jdorama's (( and Korean Drama's )) they may be somewhere on the same lines at times but the drama is totally diffrent, and u (( or I )) get wrapped up in these peoples Dramatic worlds all over again when i watch the next show. And i have always like things in other lanuages that i cant understand, it makes me get up and look up things, and u pick up words and meaning here and there when u watch and listen to things. And here i often find charaters "lame" or they really could of done better in the show or somthing like that but in jdorama's the chara's the their reactions r perfect (( in my opinion ^-^ ))

Heh, those are some damn good reasons, Potato-Guy... I should mention #3 to my nephew (also 19), who is totally clueless to doramas...

whats in it for me? guess like everyone said, im tired of the reality shows and local dramas here (except smallville.. that show rocks!) its just that the dramas here so far were all directing to sex and thats one of the reasons why kids these days does it now.. but yeh thats my opinion, so dont bash me.. and i just love jdrama for some reason i cant explain, its like saying "i love applejacks.. idk... but i just do" -kinda impression

Yeah, I for one, never would have though that I'd be watching a tv series about politics. hehehe. But as soon as i started watching it, via net downloads at first to catch up, i got hooked. I think the first season is the best though.

The first season is out on DVD, I believe.

I like them for several reasons:

1) Good acting. In the US, TV acting is looked upon as "inferior." For instance, once an actor makes it big time and does major films, acting on TV is beneath him/her. It's not like this in Japan, and it shows on the screen. Quite frankly, I have never been moved emotionally by American TV as much as I have Japanese dramas.

2) Great stories. I think this has to do with the format itself. In American TV, most series are more-or-less self contained. With Japanese drama, the format is compact 12-13 episodes, and that is it. The script writer must introduce the characters, advance the plot, and end it in a span of 8 hours of film.

3) Good production values. The sets aren't confined to studio lots. Shooting is done in various locations, camera work is as good as some movies.

I got started on them because I was learning about the culture and language. I like that they are short. Some long shows just wear on me after a while. When something is 12 episodes, I watch each one. I like a lot of the plots too, and a lot of the idols. Plus they are different from what I watch everyday on TV.

o yah...occasionally i see a couple of talented actors and/or cute actresses and i start to wanna watch more of their dramas...yup

I like it short, the plots, the touching endings, the dark endings, not always the ususal happy ending, not always the superheros beats the villains ending... I hate the local dramas here, so predictable...
