A good chunk of that comes from the bittorrent "chatty" protocol. With the newest release of the official bittorrent client and tracker claiming huge bw savings I'm hoping this translate to less chatty times as well.
Well, users are lazy bastards and are loathe to upgrade, and being one myself, I feel qualified to opine on the subject.
I did connect to a tracker once that told me my client was too old. I don't know how it worked, but maybe you can force users to upgrade.
Don't spare the whip on them. It's for their own good.
I'd just like to say this has turned out to be a very educational thread for me. Its a good break from all the idol or request filled threads i run into. As to your case I really can't offer any advice. Other than good luck and I hope this ends up in your favor.

Don't really know the details, but is this the reason why some trackers (like animetorrents.com) completely ban the use of particular clients or build versions? (Heavy/unnecessary loading on the trackers?)
Look at the situation on the bright side, D-Addicts is only going to be bigger, better, and faster. If none of this would have happened, D-Addicts wouldn't be forced to move to a larger scale. In doing so, the community will grow and drama awareness increases, which will lead to more members and more sharing.
Did D-Addicts have a donation icon? If so, I didn't see it but if it didn't.. maybe Ruro should have one for D-Addicts v2.0
I'd be willing to put in 10 dollars a month if I could get a little space off there and move off my current hosting company. I'm sure if we can get enough folks to do this, we can get a nice dedicated server just for jdrama folks. bmwracer, ahouchaude, and other uploadit.org users can transition off that and onto this and help with the hosting costs as well...How does that sound to some folks? _________________

.... or get a job at an ISP like I have, and get it all for $0.00/month. All I had to do was scrape up a Pentium III, and they let me run it out of the NOC for free.
Or even better, get a girlfriend or boyfriend who works for an ISP. I dated a girl who worked for an ISP about 10 years ago when I was still working at the hospital -- got free hosting out of that commitment. Hey, if I date a high-tempered Korean girl who likes throwing stuff at me like trophies and such, I should get SOMETHING out of it for free.

Special thanks to groink for his support. I had consider your offer of putting d-addicts on your server but I don't want to kill your box with the heavy traffic. So I'll just put a 1/3 of it on there instead, namely one of the tracker. Thanks again groink!

I'm sure if you reexamine your PHP code and MySQL database access, you can probably optimize it to reduce the CPU load.
The PHP is from phpBB and the tracker code. The phpBB code is quite large and I've only modified what I need to, I'm hesitant to change its fundamental workings because I may want to upgrade to a newer version in future so I want to keep the mods down to a minimum.
As for the tracker code, well I'm moving to a different tracker software

Here's a dedicated server for 60 bucks a month. There are other similar deals for around the same price range.

Thats not a bad idea thetenken. I'm willing to put in $50 if you can put in $10 and we can share a dedicated server. Is the link provided above your choice of preference?

Holy....****. I haven't seen anything with 200 GB transfer for lower than maybe $100 a month, most averaging $200
The now abandoned v-drama.us only cost $199/mo with 1100GB limit and 2x80GB space.
Too bad you guys unable to use the abandoned server. It was paid full year (till Oct 2004) 100% from donations, but the damn fed want me to shut down the server for copyright issue and deleted the whole content. :\
The server is hosted by RackShack.
If you need help finding hosting, I suggest you to visit: http://www.webhostingtalk.com and post a request in their forum with the gigs you need for quotation.
Another one is: http://www.serverpronto.com/ -- However I never use them personally, so I don't know how is their policy. You might want to contact them if you are interested

Whoa! They are going after fanworks now? Is this a new thing? Or was it something other than a fanwork?
I know that fanworks are sort of in a grey area: although they are for personal, non-profit, even educational use, they usually are a complete copy of the original ... so in the US, they may be found to infringe.
I just read an article that a judge in Canada ruled that d/l'ing music for personal use does not infringe copyrights! That's awesome. Go Canada! Another article did a study finding that d/l'ing music doesn't hurt CD sales either. Maybe the tide will turn and the stupid entertainment industry will recognize the value that fans generate. and maybe they'll start being more cooperative instead of being antagonistic.
And maybe our community just needs to get a hosting service somewhere in Canada?

thanks for the links prince. You'd think the feds have more serious crimes to go after than people doing fansub work
