A friend of mine wanted to know what I'd recommend for comedies similar to My Boss & My Hero or Dragon Zakura. I couldn't think of anything, so I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions.
Well, I tried watching both of those series but stopped after a couple of episodes of inanities.
However, if your friend likes that kind of somewhat silly, exaggerated type of comedy, I'd recommend the first two seasons of Shomuni and the first two seasons of Salaryman Kintaro.
A more recent series would be Haken no Hinkaku--the exaggeration there is in the character stellarly played by Ryoko Shinohara: a super duper office temp who'd make anyone feel inadequate.
If it's a school setting comedy that your friend is interested in, the only one that is remotely school-related that I would recommend is Sweet Home, imo a terrific, satirical look at parental obsession to get their child into the best school, in this case, kindergarten.

Hmm I've been into Shinohara's doramas lately like At Home Dad, Unfair & Hanayome wa Yakudoshi. I want to watch more of her works and I heard about Haken no Hinkaku and Anego, but afaik they are almost the same setting (?), which one would you guys recommend for me to watch ?

Sorry! I must say that lots of people enjoyed the films...It's not that I don't like far out, or kooky plots, but for me this somehow didn't work...but it did put Chiaki Kuriyama and Kou Shibasaki on the map.
Exactly...as I said: It is less far out in the book (if you can accept the "alternate history" stuff- including the slight social criticism). But in this aspect the movie just failed. It was still quite good IMO because Kuriyama and Shibasaki were REALLY good (okay, our favorite Chiaki was uhm, really really good only in one big scene...but this one rocked). Not to forget Ishikawa Eri ( I even tracked down her later movies after that)
But on the other side: I did not even find Noriko (who played her...can't remember now) annoying
Main male cast was good too...
The difference from the book that I really liked was that Hirono got a bit more attention ...not a big character moment, but I liked it.
Note about the book: Even though it is available in English...the translation was obviously made under great time pressure and is not that good. It is still readable (and enjoyable), but not great (and proof-reading failed in some places too). I translated parts of the original for myself (very painstaking process), so i think I know what I'm talking about.
But yeah, I recommend it.

They're both set in an office, but they are totally different dramas. Ryoko also plays a different type of character in each. She's a full-timer in Anego who everyone looks up to for advice. In Haken she is a temp who does not like to be friendly with people. They're both funny shows but Haken is kind of whackier. I enjoyed that one more but I suggest you watch both.

Thanks I'll try both of them then but I'll watch Haken first since the whackier the better
Seems like the last dorama that came out that I liked was in 2006 (Nodame Cantabile), and all my favorite doramas were released 3-4 years ago (1 Litre of Tears, Sekai no Chuushin)

I might check that one out, I've been looking for something more dramatic though. I like doramas that bring me to tears.

I haven't seen anything melodramatic lately so I can't give any particular recommendations on that score, but check out Kekkon Dekinai Otoko...it's really entertaining.

i don't quite get this part. how is Dragon Zakura a comedy?
I have never seen that drama before, so I have no idea. Maybe he meant "a comedy like MBMH" and also "something like DZ" but mushed it altogether into one sentence to make everyone confused?

Thanks! I'll try suggesting the Shomuni series. I haven't seen Haken no Hinaku yet, so I'll check it out.
And Sweet Home sounds interesting. I think I'll try getting it from someone. _________________
Hi iam kinda new to the whole JDRAMA, i just started watching some. Iam a big anime fan and one of my favorite genre is HAREM. For those of you who dont know what harem is it means 1 main male role surrounded by many girls. There mostly about comedy, love-romance and very perverted. So if theres any recomondations please let me know or anything sort of like this genre. Cuz i havent found any jdrama that are like this but there so many anime of this type.
So, I am going to need to watch alot of J-doramas (The explanation for this is over in the introductions thread)
I am currently watching RH Plus and Akihabara@deep. I love RH Plus. Anyway, I need to find other shows I might like. Some shows that are a bit more serious than RH Plus would be good.
I tend to like supernatural, investigation and slice of life shows.
Also, if there is any Go playing or homosexual content I will be very happy.
