"Last Friends" theme sung by Utada
Mon, March 17, 2008 (4:30pm EDT)

Hikaru Utada is providing the theme for the Fuji TV drama "Last Friends." Last year, her "Flavor of Life" was used as an insert song in "Hana Yori Dango 2," but this will be her first actual theme song for a drama series since the 2002 release "Sakura Drops."

The song is a medium-tempo ballad titled "Prisoner of Love." It is one of the tracks on her new album "HEART STATION" that goes on sale this week.

"Last Friends" stars Masami Nagasawa, Juri Ueno, Eita, Ryo Nishikido, and Asami Mizukawa. The first episode airs on April 10.

TOKIO's Matsuoka living with girlfriend of 5 years
Mon, March 17, 2008 (4:52pm EDT)

TOKIO drummer Masahiro Matsuoka is the latest Johnny's Jimusho member to publicly reveal a romantic relationship. According to the new issue of FLASH, Matsuoka is currently living together with a woman that he has been seeing for about 5 years.

FLASH described the woman as short and resembling idol Shoko Nakagawa (Nakagawa herself is 155 cm tall). The magazine published photos taken last month of Matsuoka and the girl at their apartment. Last week, a reporter directly asked Matsuoka about the relationship, and he openly acknowledged it.

Johnny's Jimusho said they had no comment in particular, but also mentioned that they have not heard anything about a possible marriage.

A little over a week ago, bandmate Tatsuya Yamaguchi announced that he got married and is now expecting his first child.

Hiroki Uchi joins "Osen" cast
Tue, March 18, 2008 (6:04pm EDT)

The next step in the comeback of former NEWS member Hiroki Uchi is his first regular drama series role in almost three years. He will appear in NTV's "Osen," which stars actress Yu Aoi as the "okami" of a long-standing Tokyo restaurant. Uchi will play Yoshio Ezaki, a young and confident chef who comes to work at the restaurant.

In 2005, Uchi was suspended for underage drinking. He was subsequently removed from NEWS and demoted to trainee status within Johnny's Jimusho, but he finally returned to television work with the "Isshun no Kaze ni Nare" drama mini-series that aired in February.

Yon-sama to play lead voice in "Winter Sonata" anime
Tue, March 18, 2008 (6:13pm EDT)

Actor Bae Yong Joon is reportedly playing the lead voice in the anime version of the popular 2002 Korean drama "Winter Sonata," in which he co-starred with Choi Ji Woo.

The anime was recently confirmed, with a press event scheduled for March 28. The project is apparently a collaborative production between Japanese and Korean studios, and news reports suggest that it is a single work rather than a series. In addition to a television broadcast, there are plans for theater screenings.

More details will be revealed at the press conference on the 28th.

D-BOYS starring in "Shakariki!" movie adaptation
Wed, March 19, 2008 (5:02pm EDT)

"Shakariki!," the first manga series by artist Masahito Soda, is being adapted as a live-action film, starring members of the acting group D-BOYS. Serialized in Shonen Champion from 1992 to 1995, the comic focused on high schoolers involved in the sport of bicycle racing.

D-BOYS leader Yuya Endo stars as Teru, who is trying to revive his school's defunct bicycle club. Yuichi Nakamura ("Kamen Rider Den-O") plays the talented Poppo, and Hiroki Suzuki ("Juken Sentai Gekiranger") plays Yuta, a racer from a rival school. The three actors began practicing in December, and last week they underwent more intensive training that included cycling for 60km every day.

The rest of the cast includes Noriko Nakagoshi as Teru's sister Sayuri, Miho Nakai as one of the team's mothers, Akira Emoto as the school principal, Yoichi Nukumizu as vice principal, and Taizo Harada as the team's coach.

This is the first feature-length film helmed by Shinsuke Ono, who has worked as an assistant director on movies such as Takeshi Kitano's "Kids Return." Shooting begins on Thursday and is expected to take until the end of April. Showgate will distribute the movie in September.

SUGIZO to fill in for hide at X Japan concerts
Wed, March 26, 2008 (1:37am EDT)

It has been confirmed that LUNA SEA's SUGIZO will be participating in the upcoming X Japan reunion concerts, on March 28-30 at the Tokyo Dome. He will be taking on the role of guitarist, filling in for deceased member hide.

SUGIZO and Yoshiki have worked together before as part of the supergroup SKIN, along with Gackt and Miyavi.

However, SUGIZO is not the only guitarist who will participate in the concerts. Both Richard Fortus (of Guns N' Roses) and Wes Borland (formerly of Limp Bizkit) are playing, and more guests are planned.

Charts: "Heart Station" makes it five straight number ones for Utada
Thu, March 27, 2008 (12:37am EDT)

Hikaru Utada's album "HEART STATION" has sold 480,000 copies and is ranked #1, making it her 5th straight #1 original album since her debut. This ties her with The Checkers, Hikaru Genji, and KinKi Kids for the third-longest streak, behind BoA (6) and Ayumi Hamasaki (8). Including her singles collection in 2004, this is her 6th consecutive chart-topper. The album also set the record for initial week sales in 2008, surpassing the 421,000 copies sold by Kumi Koda's "Kingdom."

In Oricon's singles rankings, Namie Amuro's single "60s 70s 80s" held the #1 spot at 38,000 copies. In an extremely rare occurrence, the single debuted at #2 last week only to jump to #1 this week. This comes as the result of a strong promotional campaign, as well as low sales from competing artists. This is her 10th #1 single, with the last one being 1998's "I HAVE NEVER SEEN." It also marks her 14th straight year with a top 10 ranking.

THE ALFEE's "Lifetime Love" was the #2 single, selling 32,000 copies. It has been 16 years since the group entered the Top 3, and the song became their 41st consecutive Top 10 single, tying B'z for second place behind SMAP (42). "Lifetime Love" is the theme to the TBS drama series "Mikon Roku Shimai 2," while its coupling song, "Wonderful Days," is the image song of the 2008 Osaka International Ladies Marathon.

Also in the Top 10 singles were Project.R, Mai Kuraki, and actress Manami Konishi. "Sunny Day" is Konishi's singing debut, released under the alias of Kazue Fujiki, the character she plays in the movie "Sweet Rain: Shinigami no Seido." The song sold close to 10,000 copies to obtain the #10 ranking. The last actress to make the Top 10 with her singing debut under a different name was Masami Nagasawa with the single "Sailor Fuku to Kikanju."

Meanwhile, four new albums besides Utada's "HEART STATION" entered the Top 10, released separately by KREVA, Shoko Nakagawa, FLOW, and Hiroshi Tamaki. Nakagawa's entry was the biggest news of the bunch, as "Big Bang!!!" is her first original album.
