Yeah, the Aussie girls were outclassed in womens basketball. They really did the job on Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor.
I think both of them were playing through injuries though. Lauren Jackson actually will be getting surgery on her ankles and be out for this WNBA season.
U.S. beats Spain, giving both the men's and women's basketball team gold medals.
Yeah, I stayed up to watch that game and the medal presentation as well.
US team stopped playing D in this game... Fortunately, they shot really well.
I thought the game was really poorly refereed... Ticky-tack fouls on occasions, then no whistles on rough play, particularly from the Spanish team: I think that was part of their tactic was to get the US off their game...

The U.S. had their moments on defense, but they gave the Spaniards quite a few easy shots as well. I agree with you about the referring, really inconsistent and there was some rough play. I'm surprised the refs didn't give Spain a technical for the bench players' constant complaining.
The U.S. shot well, and I sure was glad considering they seemed to have some difficulty against Spain's zone defense, but I give Spain credit for hanging around and not letting those double-digit deficits get to them.

Yeah I knew that. But I didn't want to use it as an excuse. The USA would have won anyway, I reckon

.... not that I usually watch the WNBA.
Maybe you will now
Australia finished 6th on Gold medal tally, 5th for overall. Pretty damn good for a country of only 21 million people

This actually was one of Team USA's worst defensive games .... how many times could you let Juan Carlos Navarro get into the lane and do a tear-drop???

They did, at Rubio near the end. These international refs seem more tolerant ... yet also more inept than their NBA counterparts.

I'll say... That guy was doing that at will and the US couldn't stop it.

Yeah, the refs are supposed to keep the game under control and they didn't... Any they were inconsistent as hell.
I was getting worried that the game would end on a controversial call, like in Munich '72...

So far Tokyo, Chicago and Madrid have been voted out for the 2016 Olympic games. And the winner is........
The 2016 Olympics are going to Rio de Janeiro, putting the games in South America for the first time.
Rio beat surprise finalist Madrid in the last round of voting.
Chicago was knocked out in the first round \ in one of the most shocking defeats ever handed down by the International Olympic Committee \ and Tokyo was eliminated in the second round.
Rio had played heavily on the fact that South America has never previously hosted the games, while Europe, Asia and North America have done so repeatedly. Now, only Africa and Antarctica remain as continents that have not been awarded an Olympics.

You know I find it kinda unfair that Rio won. I don't have anything against the city but the Pan American games were held there in 2007. Brazil will host the FIFA World Cup in 2014. And now they get the Olympics. I don't know it just feels like their getting a lot of events.
Adviser to Rio bid slams Ishihara for 'inappropriate' comments

COPENHAGEN \
An adviser to Rio de Janeirofs successful run for the 2016 Summer Olympics slammed Tokyo Gov Shintaro Ishihara on Tuesday for suggesting that the Brazilian city had used backroom politics to win the bid for the Games.
Mike Lee criticized Ishiharafs comments and went as far as to call the Tokyo governor eea bad loser.ff
Ishihara said at a press conference in Tokyo on Sunday he heard that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made eedaring promisesff to African people and that French President Nicolas Sarkozy promised to support Riofs bid if Brazil purchased French-made fighter jets.
He also said, eeinvisible dynamics were at play.ff It is unclear, however, which of those comments were a direct cause for Riofs backlash.
eeIt was suggesting or hinting that there was some sort of trickery involved. It was very inappropriate. Everybody fights to win and some do better than others,ff said Lee.
Tokyo was up against Rio, Chicago and Madrid but was eliminated in the second round of voting by the International Olympic Committee on Friday after Chicago went out in the first round.
Lee said the Rio bid committee would formally notify the IOC about the matter on Tuesday but also called for an official apology from Ishihara.
eeYou have to say it was un-Olympic. English has a phrase, itfs sour grapes. Good thing is to lose with dignity and those comments were not dignified,ff said Lee. eeItfs just we formally notifying the IOC and that becomes a matter for them, but we feel he should apologize.ff
Lee said Brazil, which is the first South American county to win an Olympic bid, was offended by Ishiharafs comments.
eeRio won, we are celebrating, wefre starting the work...but you know there are good losers and bad losers. Ifm afraid his remarks suggest he is a bad loser.ff
In a world with its share of racist xenophobic politicians, Tokyo's Governor Ishihara Shintaro is a member in good standing of that group. He's had a long history of being a bigoted oaf, and the fact that he's been governor since 1999 speaks volumes about the citizens of Tokyo prefecture who keep re-electing him. He probably worked harder and put himself out there more than anyone else in Japan to get Tokyo the Olympics, so Tokyo's failure is a resounding slap in the face to him.
