Anyway, I checked it on the Pioneer and the sound is alright. I don't know if I should count that player since it's able to play data discs though. I haven't checked it on the JVC, but I will as soon as I'm finished with recording something.
For the moment, it sounds like those two off-brands are the ones giving you problems (no surprise about the Lite-On... I had one... It's a POS)...

How old are the Lite-On and the Koss players?
They might have misaligned/uncalibrated lasers...
I agree that the Lite-On has its share of problems, but it has some good aspects too. It was given to me as a gift, so I do appreciate it.
It's been almost 3 years since I got the Lite-On and I think about 2 years for the other one. I think I'm going to try checking the discs on some other DVD players once I'm able to. Thanks for all your help with the troubleshooting, beem! _________________
Observation: now that the memory modules were reinstalled/reseated, my fresh install of XP on another HDD ran without a hitch.. Before, the XP install conked out trying to copy files like tcpip.sys and eventually blue-screened on boot... Don't know why after all those files it copied, it consistently failed with the tcpip.sys file and every file thereafter...
Very odd.
If it was an intermittent failure with the RAM module contacts, you'd think the failure point would be random and not at the same point during the XP install...

when i have too many connections open, using Utorrent, I get random BSOD's. took me long time to find the cause. even if you don't have your BT client open, all those people who you were connected with, could be 100's even over 1000's of people are continually hammering your system. resulting in BSOD.
did you have any other systemcrashes lately?
or did you get any windowsupdates? like SP3? did you do the TCPIP hack? (the halfopen-full open connections one)

It had nothing to do with BT... Did you see my other posts?

I installed the free version of Comodo Firewall Pro a few days back and I'm about ready to uninstall it. For some reason, the program won't save my choices when it comes to the programs I use, so every time I boot up Windows I have to go through the same process. Whether it's Utorrent, News feeds, or just opening up Firefox, I have to tell the firewall to allow those programs to access the ports, despite the fact that I had the "remember my choice" box checked the previous times.
Comodo's a highly-rated program, but the constant nagging has me looking for other firewall programs. Windows Firewall is like an oxymoron of sorts; I wouldn't trust it really and it has gotten low ratings. Looks like I'll give ZoneAlarm a shot.

Gehh, new system bug with my fresh XP installation: the OS doesn't recognize DVDRW discs in the DVD/CD burner...
If I attached a DVD-ROM drive, there's no problem: all media is accessible.
I don't recall this problem with my existing XP install...?
I had a similar thing happen once with a Win98 computer - the CDRW drive would not recognise ANY blank discs. Nothing I did would convince it that it was a CD burner

I've had no luck trying to find a driver for the burner since pretty much every manufacturer uses the default driver that's part of Windows.
