A huge stretch for Sho because word has it, the original cast was brilliant. [/url]
I've seen the first 3 episodes of the original show and it is brilliant, the acting is just great, it puts to shame the acting of more popular dramas,, It's a shame that the original drama (and the dramas in that time slot) never gets much attention and thus never get subbed
Man,, I don't think any of these new dramas could fix the mediocrity of last season (the only thing good was love shuffle)
the only thing I'm expecting is LOVE GAME (which hopefully gets subbed)

I must say, the orginal was brilliant. It does make me kind of afraid for Sakurai performance as the new MC. Hoping he can pull it off
Thanks. There are a few unusual ones that I haven't read about anywhere else.

This hasn't been announced officially. But this is almost official. There has been TV spots commercials of "Fumou Chitai"(Barren Zone/The Waste Land) in FujiTV lately written only "XX days left" on the screen, and there's the banner too on FujiTV webpage.
The news was posted at TV Yahoo website once, but then it was deleted not long after, probably because the site owner made a mistake thinking it was okay to announce it. But some fans managed to save the news and I translated it as below:
FujiTV 50th Anniversary Drama
FUMOU CHITAI
Starting Autumn 2009 and will last for 2 seasons until March 2010!
On Thursday 10 PM slot. The popular novel by Yamazaki Toyoko (author of Shiroi Kyoto and Karei-naru Ichizoku) will be adapted to a drama! And, KARASAWA TOSHIAKI will take the job as the leading role!
The production will cost 1,800,000,000 yen with 6 months broadcast period.
Karasawa Toshiaki as the leading role and Wakui Emi will play his wife.
The leading role's bestfriend will be played by Yanagiba Toshiro.
Koyuki will play the part as Karasawa's character's lover.
Other casts include Takenouchi Yutaka, Amami Yuki, Ito Shiro, Abe Sadao, Furuta Arata, Sasaki Kuranosuke and many more.
Sounds promising!! Hopefully, the official news will be announced tomorrow.
Trying to search around for the synopsis of the story, and I can only find this:
Based on the novel by Toyoko Yamazaki, which was a bestseller at the time mainly because it describes bribery very similar to the actual Lockheed Scandal, even she wrote the book before the scandal became public. The title roughly means 'Barren zone'. - Iki was a staff officer during WWII. In 1959, he is recruited by a big trading company. They are at a severe comepetition about the Defence Department's choice of the next fighter. In the course of trying to sell their fighter, Iki pays bribes to an officer of the Defence Department to obtain the rival company's estimate sheet... _________________
"Fumou Chitai" (The Waste Land)'s filming will start mid-July, for October 2009 - March 2010 broadcast. Filming location include New Zealand, in a snowy field. _________________
Fuji TV plans new "Fumou Chitai" drama
Sat, May 16, 2009 (2:34am EDT)
Broadcaster Fuji TV has announced the production of a live-action drama based on the best-selling novel "Fumou Chitai." The series is a major project for the network, as it will run for half a year.
The original novel was written by author Toyoko Yamasaki, also responsible for the books behind the dramas "Shiroi Kyoto" and "Karei Naru Ichizoku." The story depicts a former colonel who survived a Siberian detention camp and resumed his life in Japan working for a trading company. It was previously adapted as a movie in 1976, followed a 7-month long TV series on TBS in 1979.
"Fumou Chitai" will star actor Toshiaki Karasawa, who also played the lead in "Shiroi Kyoto." That series, which also lasted six months long, was produced in honor of Fuji TV's 45th anniversary and achieved ratings of 23.9%. Similarly, "Fumou Chitai" will help mark the network's 50th year, and Fuji TV is hoping that it even surpasses "Shiroi Kyoto."
In addition to Karasawa, the cast features several others who have experience in lead roles: Emi Wakui, Toshiro Yanagiba, Koyuki, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Yuki Amami, and Yutaka Takenouchi. There are also many veteran supporting members, such as Isao Hashizume, Atsuo Nakamura, Ittoku Kishibe, and Yoshio Harada.
Shooting starts in mid-July, with locations including New Zealand. The show will run in Fuji TV's Thursday 10:00pm time slot starting in October.

Nagase becomes a superspy in new drama
Thu, May 21, 2009 (1:44am EDT)
TOKIO's Tomoya Nagase is starring in a new drama on NTV next season. The show, currently untitled, is described as a comedy revolving around a superspy character.
Nagase plays Kyosuke Yoroi, a swindler serving a 30-year sentence after being caught for more than a dozen cases of fraud. However, the government sees that Kyosuke's skills can be put to use, so it arranges for his release under the condition that he becomes a spy to help fight against terrorists. His character is a bit clumsy and gets easily carried away, but he also possesses athleticism and sex appeal.
Each episode will tell one story, with different guests appearing each week. As part of his spy work, Nagase will be dressing up in various disguises, such as a pilot, a doctor, and a Korean actor resembling Bae Yong Joon. He will also be equipped with an array of gadgets, such as a ring that turns into a pistol and a shoe that doubles as a cell phone.
With Nagase filling in the "James Bond" role, his spy team will also have a beautiful "Bond girl"-type character named Dorothy.
Ryoichi Kimizuka is in charge of the screenplay. NTV will start airing the series in July, putting it in the network's Saturday 9:00pm time slot.
So seem like Johnny's boys will dominate next season? Yamapi, Nagase, Takki-Ryo, Kansai Jr-Matchy, SMAP's Tsuyoshi... not to mention Gokusen The Movie that will premiere on early July. With all the promos, seem like Johnnys boys will often appear in all Japan's national channels in summer XD
For anti-Johnnys people, if you live in Japan, I suggest you NOT to switch on the TV in July, or it'll hurt your eyes _________________

"Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" returns with 4th season
Mon, June 1, 2009 (3:19am EDT)
Fuji TV's popular medical drama "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" is coming back for a fourth season. Starring Yosuke Eguchi (41) and Nanako Matsushima (35), the show premiered in 1999 and had additional seasons in 2001 and 2005.
Eguchi and Matsushima will reprise their roles as emergency room doctors. Matsushima has not had a regular TV role since the drama's third season in 2005 (though she had a guest role in both seasons of "Hana Yori Dango"). This also marks her first series since having her second child in November 2007, just as the third season was her comeback work after giving birth to her first child in 2004.
Yusuke Santamaria (38) will join the cast for this season, playing a rival doctor. Other cast members include Tae Kimura (38), returning in her role as a nurse from the second season, and Kie Kitano (18) as a rookie nurse.
Fuji TV has scheduled the drama for Tuesday nights at 9:00pm, starting on July 7.
Shingo to star in "Kochikame" drama series
Mon, June 1, 2009 (2:50am EDT)
On Monday, it was confirmed that TBS is working on a live-action adaptation of Osamu Akimoto's long-running comedy manga "Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo," known by the abbreviation "Kochikame." The drama series, set for this summer, will star SMAP's Shingo Katori (32).
"Kochikame" has been serialized in Shonen Jump since 1976, with more than 130 million tankoubon copies sold so far. It has been adapted to anime, theater, and even a live-action film, but this will be the first drama series based on the comic.
The drama revolves around the misadventures of Kankichi Ryotsu (Katori), an officer stationed at a police box in front of Kameari Park in Tokyo's Katsushika ward. Each story is expected to be contained within a single episode. The show will feature many of the manga's well-known characters, including Neruo Higurashi, the policeman who only works once every four years at the time of the Summer Olympics.
Shonen Jump announced the drama in the latest issue that went on sale June 1, which featured Katori on the cover. He is actually the first Japanese person to grace the magazine's cover, though foreign celebrities have appeared on it three times before.
The "Kochikame" drama will air in TBS's Saturday 7:56pm time slot, which is currently home to the series "MR.BRAIN," starring fellow SMAP member Takuya Kimura. The first episode will air in August.
