I, for one, am thankful for the top 50 list... when I first got into Jdramas a few years ago, I watched dramas based on it and I saw tons of great dramas. That said, I noticed that now there's an awful lot of teen/high school dramas on there and they seem to be pushing out some of the classics and, of course, there's lots of great dramas not on the list. I'm not a teen, so naturally I have different tastes.
Anyway, it's kind of funny to see two guys always being so dismissive of dramas with young, attractive guys in them, when each of these guys have avatars and/or sigs of female actresses and big shock, ALL of their favorite "artistes" are attractive female actresses. It just seems a bit hypocritical.

Hey, I got Sei Hiraizumi, Ken Ishiguro and Kimtaku in there. I'm not a TOTAL hypocrite.
Edit: I forgot, I got Odagiri Joe too! Guess that makes me even LESS of a hypocrite!!

Then i think iLm a bit of an hypocrit since i voted for Itoh Misaki and Shaku Yumiko, i know that the two of them are probably some of the worst japanese actressLs, but anyway i like them and i voted for them for that sole reason but i donLt think iLm an hypocrit because i can be impartial and admit how much their acting stink.
ItLs the same reason i voted for Kame, heLs nothing compared with guys like Oguri Shun or Yamada Takayuki(just talking about young actors) but i enjoyed almost all his characters and his doramas so i vote for him.
Now being a die hard fan is when i read comments of people saying: "Yamapi is a great actor", from the young guys heLs one of the worst(if not the worst), but the same reason he is in 3rd position in the poppularity poll is the same reason why that crappy movie Twilight won almost all the MTV Movie Awards.
Now if you ask my impartial opinion the best youg actors in Japan are probably Ueno Juri or Yamada Takayuki, the best actor is Watanabe Ken(by far), from the dorama world is probably Abe Iroshi.

Well if any of those guys could act rather than being the "flavor of the month" us guys wouldn't be so dismissive... And conversely, aren't there girls/women who have done the same with their avatars and faves?

I believe that compared to the young "actors" that are placed in dramas nowadays, the actresses of the same age are much more talented. And aren't chosen for rolesjust because they are in the latest singing group.

That's true, but a lot of the actresses start out as models, gravure models. I'm not saying that's bad (although it's kind of sad that they all have to go through the gravure phase, I think, especially when a lot of them are so young), but I don't think we should discredit people based on what field they entered the geinokai. I think the "'actors'" everyone is referring to are the JE boys, right? I also agree most of them are poor, mostly one-dimensional actors, but if you compare them to popular actresses like Horikita Maki or Aragaki Yui, it's about the same to me. They can be pretty bland, they can have their moments.
I don't know, sometimes I just think there's a condescending tone that goes beyond constructive criticism pervading this board, and maybe that's what bettebogart was getting at, though I of course can't speak for her/him.

That may be true, but I can only comment on the ones i've seen act. (or try to act, as the case may be).

I dont think constructive criticism would help most of those horrible actors. I don't even know much about whether or not they were pop singers before hand but if they were, thats a really good sign of why they suck so much. Theres a reason most singers will get laughed off the stage for trying to make that transition in the west. You want a real actor go see Tadanobu Asano! Man is a genius. Abe Hiroshi is also quite good.
As for females I've really taken a liking to this girl in Nodame Cantible.

Abe Hiroshi is an A-class actor.

Heh, well, I haven't seen any dramas where I thought the actors were THAT bad...lucky me I guess? And it seems like there have been a lot of successful actor-singer-model crossovers in the Asian entertainment industry. I actually don't mind them that much...things work differently.
But dude, totally agree with Tadanobu Asano! There's just something profound about his acting style...his performances in Last Life in the Universe (Thai film) and Bright Future really stuck with me. I like Abe Hiroshi too, but he's like a Denzel Washington to me--always a good performance, always an angry man, even in his comedic roles!
Anyway, just checked out your original post, and I dunno what kind of characters you're looking to relating to, but maybe Arifureta Kiseki would do the trick. Kase Ryo is another actor whom I really enjoy, and I think he did very well in this drama. It's more romance than comedy, well scratch that, it's more human drama than anything, but a couple of episodes in, you might find something about the characters that is very surprising A lot of people say that it's a slow-paced drama, and it probably is, but when I watched it, I was so lulled into the characters I didn't notice the pace at all. Even Hirai Ken mentioned that he liked this drama
Can someone recommend shows similar to Tsubasa no Oreta Tenshitachi, 1 Liter of Tears, Last Friends that are any good? Real life stuff, (serious, not comedic/melodramatic).
Also, I was wondering if there are any good dramas about host/hostess bars or lifestyle. Thanks!
