hey, happy holidays to you, The Man, and everyone else on jdorama! this holiday season is pretty dang hectic (as usual), but maybe afterwards, we can have an all-jdorama/hawaii get together!
i'm going to take back what i said about watching the jp/us/better versions. i'm going to watch ringu, then ju-on, then ju-on2. after all, i should watch the originals before the remakes. i was thinking of making an exception since these are horror movies, and if you know what's going to happen already, then i don't believe you can make an unbiased review.

Wow, haven't been here in a while. I'll just stop by to say that I agree with THE MAN one hundred thousand percent. The Japanese, bless 'em, just CAN'T make scary horror movies to save their freakin' lives. The only movie that truly creeped me out was this old, decomposing VHS copy of Suspiria that my friend Vince and I rented out of curiosity one day. That movie did what both Ringu and Ju-On failed so miserably to do for me, it had a palpable sense of suspense and the unnamed (til the end of course) evil entity in that movie had far more effective scares. Though it's this suspense and utter creepiness that Suspiria delivers time and time again throughout the movie that had chilled me.
Both Ringu and Ju-On had WAAAAAYYY too many moments where something is about to happen, only to cut to some other completely unrelated thread in the plot. Talk about going off on tangents... THE MAN is one hundred percent correct (in my eyes) with his assessment, I grew VERY ANNOYED by the fact that I was just seeing some powdery dead people making clicking noises as they walked towards some fool. Hell, if I ever saw some little shrimpy powdery boy, I'd smack his down! The ENTIRE time I was watching Ju-On I found myself just WAITING for things to happen, only to be let down AGAIN and AGAIN.
With Ringu, at LEAST the story was somewhat interesting!! The video cassete images weren't creepy to me at all, I find the scenes in Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion to be far creepier. So it's nothing I've never seen before. Hell, just listen to the Beatles' Revolution No. 9, that's creepier then the weird noises and video effects in Ringu.
Mind you I saw both Ringu and its American counterpart The Ring, both were interesting plotwise, but in terms of scare tactics, I found them to be utterly lacking. I guess the concept of being assaulted by something that is found in your daily life (the TV) can be a frightening concept, but that was done better in the X-Files with the flatworm/man hybrid that killed people while they were sitting on the John.
Anyway, I'll stick to doramas, anime and music, the Japanese have a great talent for those, but like I said, their horror is just plain mediocre.
P.S. - After wasting an hour and thirty minutes of my life watching Ju-On one week ago, I walked back to Blockbuster and rented Shaolin Soccer, that was the wisest thing I could have done given the situation
Catch you later,
Id

Ju-on, from the very first direct-to-video to the last theatrical Ju-on 2 is not linear, that's the huge difference. If you take the first theatrical when we're hopping between the two "timelines" concerning the daughter of that one cop. Technically the first theatrical isn't even a remake of the first direct-to-video, since parts of the story are left out, and other parts are finally being explained.
I like Kayoko, she has her scary moments. But ultimately I think Sadako would own Kayoko's and her brat's butt. After all, both, Kayoko and her son are just normal people, somewhat cursed and trapped. Sadako on the other hand had her powers already when she was alive. And if you follow Ring 0, well, then she was an asskicker at the age of 6-7 already. Also, when you have a look at the books and the manga, while Kayoko is just stuck in that house, Sadako's plan is to take vengeance on the whole mankind.
I'm currently hoping for a 4th Ringu book. "The Loop" leaves a few unanswered questions and it leaves one huge possible plot concerning Sadako.
What I hate in both is quite simple. The cute girls always get killed. Ringu - Tomoko; Ring 2 - Kanae; Rasen - Takano Mai; Ju-on (first theatrical) - the three schoolgirls and finally Izumi; etc etc etc... I hate that lol.

It was the only horror movie I've ever seen that made me didn't want to go anywhere and prefer to stay at my bed for 3 nights.
Ju-on was... well.. disappointing.
Since my friends told me it was a really scary movie, I watched it and.. I didn't understand which part was scary. |
Yeah... Ringu is more scarier than Ju-on...
Shizuku and sadako... really scary... _________________
