NOBUTA WO PRODUCE, HOTARU NO HIKARI.
Hotaru No Hikari started as a manga? I didn't know that. But then, I know very little about manga to begin with. I guess it just didn't seem like a manga story to me.
I noticed that Cutie Honey has been made into a live-action show now, with Mikie Hara in the starring role. I watched the first episode and it reminded me of another show I saw once, called Lazy Town, I think. Except that Cutie Honey has a lot more cleavage. Lots. It looks like fun, if you don't overdose on all the cheesecake.

Karei Naru Ichizoku (it's family orientated, mainly concentrates on the father/son relationship... though it's the kinda drama you'll either love or hate as it is set in the 70s and revolves around banking and the steel industry)
Late 60s. I loved it. Very powerful, though quite tragic.
Currently, I'm watching Security Police. I'm on episode 3 now.

HAHA sorry! I couldn't remember when it was set as it was a while since I saw it and I hurriedly went to dramawiki where I saw the year 1974... my fault for not reading... 1974 was the year the book was made lol
But yeah I loved it too and the ending affected me emotionally more than any drama ever has before :/ _________________

It affected me like that too. It was literally days before I was over it.
The reason the time period stuck in my memory, is that was around the time I was born (1967).
Don't feel too bad. I read an old review for the original film in an American newspaper, and the critic wrote that the movie was "directed by Karei Naru Ichizoku". Talk about lost in translation!

Hey guys,
I would highly appreciate some good recommendations for a drama like Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. For my taste, this is by far the best drama I have ever seen - it's funny, has a nice story (a man struggling with the women's world - I get that), good actors and though love is an issue it's not too cheezy.
I think Churasan would be a good fit. It's absolutely hilarious, and also stars Kuninaka Ryoko.
Muri na Renai is a good one too.
King's Restaurant is great, though it doesn't fit exactly into what you wrote.

Thanks for your recommendation bmwracer. I have watched Muri na Renai already as I read many good reviews about it. I think it was quite good, but not really one of my favourite dramas....

Any other recommendations???
If you are seriously looking for comedy-inclined series which are well written and well acted, I'd recommend you narrow your search to ones made in the 1990's.
Xploring recommended King's Restaurant (Ohsama no Resutoran)--that would be my first choice as well. Sweet Home would be a close second. I'd also recommend Good Mourning, Coach, Chonan no Yome 2, Kamisan Nanka Kowakunai, News no Onna, and Odoru Daisousasen.
Kekkon Dekinai Otoko is the one sore thumb that sticks out as a well written, well acted post-2000 comedy dorama; it's also different from other post-2000 dorama in that the two leads are both 40-ish with lots of acting experience.
Oh yeah, Suika is another post-2000 comedy dorama you might want to look at. Has an endearing quirkiness to it.
Thanks for all the recommendations, which will probably keep me busy for a while. It's really too bad that there is not really much comparable to Kekkon Dekinai Otoko in terms of quality (as I define it).
I haven't seen anything of gokusen yet. Yet, the plot somehow reminds me of GTO, which was not too bad, but is not really the kind of drama I wanna watch, although I like the main male actor.
I guess I'll start by trying Suika at first. The plot sounds like something I may like.

ah, your taste seems similar to mine =) good story + hot chick.... haha, i finished kekkon dekinai otoko only a week or so ago and it ended up being one of my all time favorites. i felt the need for another comedy and after looking over this websites ratings and comments, i came across Tiger & Dragon. it's a different style of comedy but i'm finding it very entertaining and funny, and itoh misaki is in it which is always a nice eye catcher.
let me know what you think if you ever check it out
EDIT:

Hehe, yeah it's sometimes as simple as a good story and a hot chick. Well said. ;-)
Tiger & Dragon has been recommended to me by many of my friends probably a thousand times. I don't know why, but I just don't get it. I tried to watch this drama twice now, but I never made it through the first episode. Maybe my Japanese is not good enough to really understand the jokes or maybe it just doesn't fit my humor. I don't know, it just doesn't get me. But I'm pretty sure, in this case, it's not the drama's fault. It's my fault ;-)
In terms of Ito Misaki we're d'accord again. I loved her in Sapuri and I also liked her in Edison No Haha.

oohh the common mistake i found with this drama is that you have to watch the special first to understand what's going on. from what i understand, the special came out first.. and then the drama came about.
i too tried watching episode 1 and was confused...
i usually watch my dramas from a stream site but none of them had the special........so i had to download the special from d-addicts... if you use something like utorrent you can just download the special eppisode individually.
let me know if you need help trying to find it or get it.
yea i enjoyed her the most in sapuri, haven't seen edison no haha though.. put that on my to watch list -.-

Same for me with T & D, it's one of the few dramas I couldn't finish and I did watch the special first.
Btw, if you like Suika you might want to try Sexy Voice and Robo :http://jdorama.com/drama.1159.htm It's written by the same people and has the immensely talented Suzuka Ohgo.

I'm another one who couldn't really get into this drama. I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes of the special, but maybe I wasn't in the mood to watch it then. Maybe I'll try to watch it eventually.

I think you or someone else recommended Sexy Voice & Robo before, but I never got around to watching it. I should bump it up my list. _________________

yea i can tell it takes a different type of audience to enjoy... it's very different from any other jdorama i've ever seen.
if you can get into it though, the actors were jus phenomenal in their roles and it was directed very well... a very well put together drama that i really enjoyed!
i'm actually keeping this one in my collection -.-

Bara no nai hanaya
Now that you say it, we didnLt have the terminally ill/pure love plot for a while.
This springLs Smile could perhaps do the trick? I havenLt seen it snce I donLt like the actors!
I can think of a few tear jerkers without the "romantic" element. I havenLt started Shiroi Haru but some jdorama members were moved to tears. Daisuki and Kaze no Garden could be options.
