That's Denver wide receiver Brandon Marshall pictured above, dressed as a box of Milk Duds. Or as a member of the 1977 Padres. Or possibly as Austin Carr.
The Broncos wore their 1960 throwback uniforms on Sunday, demonstrating beyond any doubt that life in America in 1960 was miserable. In a truly free society, clothing like that would not happen.
"The design is awful," said tight end Daniel Graham earlier in the week.
No argument here. It's an abomination. A plague. Hideous. The ugliest thing in the history of team sports. If we've exhausted all other throwback options, then let's just please agree to dress our professional athletes as modern humans from now on.
Denver's cheerleaders were required to throw it back to 1960, too, which is simply unconscionable. They were an entire squad of Marion Cunningham clones, which is, umcnot what most of us are looking for.
The Broncos beat the Patriots 20-17 in overtime on Sunday, so there's a decent chance the franchise will consider those throwbacks to be "lucky" and thus worth wearing again. We'll make every effort to warn you next time, and provide instructions for making a pinhole device for safe viewing.
Watching Ole Miss play Alabama and LSU play Florida this past weekend, I marveled at the combination of speed and physicality exhibited by all four defenses; the SEC is head and shoulders above any other conference when it comes to fielding fast, athletic, punishing defenses.
If I had a vote, I'd vote Alabama #1 at this time.
Georgia Tech is the most interesting offense to watch every week. Of course, I'm biased since I am a huge fan of the triple option attack and have been ever since it was introduced in the mid-60s and through its various permutations over the decades. With the disappearance of the Wing-T at the collegiate level (still around in high school football though), the triple option system is the only purely unselfish offense currently in college football.
This coming week is gonna be great if you're a college football fan--five games will feature top-25 teams pitted against each other.
I agree with Gaijinmark--there are more terrible NFL teams currently out there than there has been in quite a while.
Dre Bly is my nominee for the Leon Lett award.
Keith Olbermann is right--Tom Cable's punishment for punching out one of his assistant coaches is that he must continue coaching the Raiders.
I watched some of the UFL game that was broadcast on Versus last night.
Well, I doubt if I'll try watching another UFL contest . . . unless I'm absolutely craving a sports fix and the only other things on are MLB, NBA and MLS.
You know this new league (made up of four teams) is in trouble when:
--the helmet decals are indecipherable
--the nicknames have you scratching your head
--the red-shirted officials and the lime-green downmarkers distract from the game
--the stadium announcer is begging the crowd to cheer for the home team
--you wish the TV color analyst (Doug Flutie) and the sideline reporter (Kordell Stewart) were playing QB instead of the guys actually playing QB
--sideline interviews with coaches are being conducted while the game is being played
--players are being highly touted by the announcers just because they were on an NFL practice squad

I stumbled upon the same game last night.
I don't know if I'll plan another night around seeing another UFL game... but I do wish them luck. I've always thought a viable minor league was a must for the NFL. Just too many guys slip between the cracks. Either because they're overwhelmed by their first NFL camp... or because they need more time to develop. (Especially the guys who get shifted from O to D line. They need actual playing time more than reps with the scout team in practice.)
And I have to say... I spent most of the game going... Ooo! I remember him! every time they pointed someone out.
I also kind of like the fact that Denny Green got dragged back into coaching. _________________

I do that a lot when I watch old college football games on ESPNU and ESPNClassic.

I thought Green, who lives in San Diego, would have been a much better hire than Norv Turner for the Bolts. But I guess A.J. Smith, the GM, wanted someone he could control.

Didn't know this, the Ravens have a Japanese-American player, Haruki Nakamura:
Reading his bio in Wiki, I thought this was interesting: Nakamura's parents, Karen and Ryozo, were each competitive in international judo competitions. His mother is a fourth degree black belt, and his late father Ryozo was an eighth degree black belt.
Something tells me discipline was not a problem in the Nakamura household.
