A "Star's" job is to sell tickets. To put butts in the seats. To get the viewers to turn on their TVs to the star's program, regardless of what the show is about.
They do their job by being likable, compelling, sexy, beautiful, or funny. And 99% of their work is done before the show even starts. That last 1% is simply a question of delivering on what the audience expects to see from them in that performance.
But don't underestimate that final 1%. Once the Star fails to deliver on being sexy, or likable, or funny... they cease to be a star. (And when the audience drops a star, they do it with a vengeance.)
The "Actor's" job is to create a character within a particular story. They bring the character from the writer's imagination... to the screen or the stage. And they drive the story.
The audience's preconceived notions about who the actor is, or what he or she should look like, or behave like, have little or nothing to do with anything. Because "actors" are different every time. They are not being "themselves". They are not being the carefully crafted character that they play time after time.
They are different, but one isn't really any more important than the other. If the "Star" doesn't have decent actors around him people are just going to get bored and wander off. If the "actors" don't have a draw to get the people into the seats... it really doesn't matter how artful or talented they are. A show without an audience is like that tree falling in the forest with no one to hear it.
And it pretty much goes without saying that most "Top" lists (like the ones here at J-D) are comprised of Stars, not Actors.

I just started Nodame Canabile finished the first episode. I really like it but i have no idea why. I don't like classical music too much but the music in the show is really nice. I just like it. No explanation, just do.
Been watching Nobuta wo Produce past few days. Pretty nice show, Horikita Maki is such a great actress, any recommendations of more shows with her would be appreciated.
I really can't make up my mind about Kamenashi Kazuya though, seen him in several shows now and still haven't decided if I like him or not

Nodame is a great show, have fun watching it. I loved it and I don't consider myself a Classical music fan either.

It just proves that if something is really well done, anything is acceptable.

Sensei is a drama-watching MACHINE. I'm going to take a break and watch something else, I think. Something more recent.

I like this. Puts things in perspective.
Which is why I'm so thrilled when some character actor finally hits it big after languishing in SupportingRolePurgatory for years. Lots of K-actors come to mind (like Uhm Tae-woong or Hwang Jung-min), though I haven't gone that deep into the Jdorama woods to know the Great Character Actors, aside from maybe one or two--like Watabe Atsuro (BEAUTIFUL LIFE, BYAKUYAKOU).
Now, great actors with star appeal--like Johnny Depp and Daniel Day-Lewis--total WIN!!!

Glad you're liking the drama. (Re Kame, maybe watching TATTA HITOTSU NO KOI will settle the issue for you... )

And a good casting agent and director to pull the whole thing off! _________________

Sadly, none from me. Although I have watched some of her works after NwP, none is worth a recommendation. Maki is an example of an actress with potential but became a 'star' instead of a serious actor. I'll recommend her photobook though.
