Yeah, they're hard to come by, thus the various compilations like The Essential series to introduce young 'uns to Marvel's rich history from the Silver Age.

Jack "King" Kirby, Gene "The Dean" Colan, "Jazzy" Johnny Romita, etc... What a great group of artists... Applaud Applaud Applaud Applaud

animal farm was good but i find 1984 far more enjoyable and educational overall. animal farm was good but a bit to simplistic and blunt for my taste. a great read for very young inspiring minds.

Currently switching time between:
1) Confessions of a Shopaholic
2) House of Sand and Fog
3) The last volume of Peach Girl (Finally! I'd had it for nearly a month already)

My friends are avid readers so they always suggest books for me to read (more like force me to read), so I'm usually juggling my time between two or three (and a manga I read for me in case one of the books they suggest is boring). This time though, all the books are great. Quite enjoying it.

It's been awhile from when I read that one (one of the more simpler texts, admittedly, tsk, tsk) . . . but, if I'm not mistaken, I believe that passage stands to feed into the overall irony; stand-alone, you can see it as how the old man's convinced that his arrogance is enough to defeat his "brother" (perhaps a Biblical reference even, i.e., Kane and Abel); we all know what happens though and who ends up getting defeated (dont wanna' spoil it for you).

Sweat heh, i didn't really know that there was irony in this book, I'm about 2/3 way through
the oyaji did sound like an arrogant man though, but i thought the overall theme was suppose to be bravery & survival of the fittest or something Crazy

The novel (it's more of a pamphlet to me; OK, OK, just kidding Hemingway fans. Hey, I'm one too) works on many levels. "Bravery and survival of the fittest" IS one of the themes (like I said . . . it's been awhile), as it is in most of Hemingway's works; you should check out Melville's Moby-Dick if you enjoy the sea-faring flavor of that theme.

But, when you're finished with The Old Man and the Sea, ask yourself what happens to the Marlin. And then ask yourself who goes off with the lesson -- Santiago or the sea [OK, I can't stand it anymore, I'll give you my take on it, close your eyes time as needed -- yes, Santiago puts up a mean fight; probably his toughest ever. But remember what he admits . . . he admits defeat to himself; to the sea. Why do that?]?
