Did anyone see the S-1 Battle? I happened to catch it when I was in Japan. I couldn't believe how much prize money the champions got. Also, I only saw the last two blocks but it seemed painfully unfunny. Did I miss something? I usually find the comedians (Non Style, Chihara Junior, Kendo Kobayashi, Tokyo 03, etc.) to be much funnier on other programs. What were the rules for the competition?

I'm pretty sure only the final championship was televised even though it was an ongoing competition which started last year. I think this was the first year it was on tv. If I recall correctly the prize money was 1 oku yen (over $1,000,000 US)?!? That's just an unbelievable amount of money for Japanese comedians to win.

Hard Gay returns from injury

Comedian Masaki Sumitani (34), better known as the character Razor Ramon HG, will soon be returning to work after more than an 8-month absence due to injury. To start off, he has been cast as a regular on the new TBS variety show "Sekai Waraeru! Journal," which starts on April 21.

Last July, Sumitani fractured his left heel during a match of the wrestling promotion Hustle. About a week after the injury, he underwent a major surgery requiring the insertion of 12 metal pins into his foot. He was hospitalized for two months after that, then underwent a skin graft in January to restore the skin around the heel.

Since his injury, Sumitani has been in a wheelchair, causing him to lose some muscle and some weight. Unable to work, he said that his monthly income dropped to as low as 7,000 yen, but fortunately he was financially supported during that time by his wife, former idol Anna Suzuki (27).

Because Hustle shut down last October, Sumitani has effectively retired from pro wrestling. He will instead focus on his career as a comedian and actor, though he mentioned that he is aiming to become more than just his Hard Gay character. He hinted at the possibility of a Hard Lez character that he may unveil later this year.

Another owarai/variety show is ending.

"Bakusho Red Carpet" to end regular broadcast
Tue, July 20, 2010

The Fuji TV comedy show "Bakusho Red Carpet" will be ending its regular broadcast with a two-hour special on August 1. The network explained that the show will return to its status as an occasional special program.

"Bakusho Red Carpet" began as a special program in a prime time slot in February 2007. With its format of rapid routines, the show became very popular, at one point reaching ratings over 20%. In April 2008, the show was given a regular time slot on Wednesdays at 10:00pm, and it achieved its highest ratings ever (22.5%) that November. In April 2009, it was moved to an earlier slot on Saturdays at 7:00pm, and the following year it moved again to its current slot on Sundays at 8:00pm.

Over its entire run, the show has had average ratings somewhere around 15%, but lately individual episodes have dipped even below 10%. Fuji TV hopes to revive the show's popularity by turning it back into a special program. The show is expected to air at least once this fall.

From Tokyograph
Ninety-Nine's Okamura on break for health reasons

Comedian Takashi Okamura (40) of the duo Ninety-Nine is going on an indefinite hiatus from work due to health reasons. His management office, Yoshimoto Creative Agency, announced the news on Thursday night.

Okamura has been experienced poor health since mid-May. He was scheduled to hold a one-man stage show in June and July, but the performances were canceled due to his condition, Although he continued doing other work, it was ultimately decided that he should take a complete break.

Yoshimoto mentioned that Okamura was admitted to the hospital for examinations on July 12, but the company has not disclosed what his illness is. It is not known when Okamura will be released from the hospital, much less return to work.

The two members of Ninety-nine are regulars on the television shows "Guruguru Ninety-Nine" and "Mecha-Mecha Iketeru!" as well as their radio show "Ninety-Nine no All Night Nippon."

Fuji TV cancels show over injured comedians
Wed, August 18, 2010 (9:46am EDT)

Comedian Hiroaki Matsuda (33), of the duo Hiking Walking, was injured while taping a special episode of Fuji TV's variety program "Orewan," it has been learned. Matsuda is the third celebrity to suffer an injury on the show, leading Fuji TV to announce that it is canceling the episode's scheduled broadcast on August 22.

The show involved a game in which contestants used a cushion as a sled, then launched off a ramp attempting to land onto a polystyrene "island" in the middle of a pool. During a taping on July 26, Matsuda's attempt resulted in a broken left rib, which will take approximately 3-4 weeks to heal.

The same game has already resulted in two other injuries on separate days of filming. Hiroyuki Sugiyama (32) of Wagaya broke his shoulder, and Tomonori Jinnai (36) cracked a rib.

"Orewan" originally aired from October 2009 to March 2010. It has already had three special episodes before this.

From www.tokyograph.com

I'm surprised that they didn't just cancel the game after one comedian got injured. It's too bad they had to cancel the entire special because of staff stupidity.
