Hello! So I'm looking for some Japanese dramas that deal with politics, business, etc.. preferably dramas set in modern times. I'd like a show that is serious like Shiroi Kyoto, I don't really care for romance (I love romance, but I don't care about romance right now). I've already heard about one show JIN (again, modern dramas no ancient ones please, I watch a lot of korean sageuks and need a break from it >_<) I've seen just how awesome Shiroi Kyoto was, and would love to watch a show like it again! Political, business rivals, office politics, etc etc... Thanks!!

^ Off the top of my head, I'd say Koi ni Ochitara... Big business, corporations, power grabbing, etc.

I love the synopsis of the story from D-Addicts wiki, plus the lead song is by one of my favorite japanese music artists, so this is definitely going on my queue. Thanks!

I've never watched the famous Kimtaku in any show before, so it should be interesting. The Karei naru Ichizoku just looks and sounds awesome (epic main theme song, sounds like something from The Godfather film)

Change has Abe Hiroshi. And that is all I need to know in order to know this one is/will be good. lol

Good luck finding a drama comparable in quality and similar in tone and theme to Shiroi Kyoto. You hit the jackpot with that one.

The only one I've seen that approaches it is one that's already been recommended to you: Fumo Chitai. Interestingly, Karasawa Toshiaki, who was one of the leads in Shiroi Kyoto, is the protagonist in Fumo Chitai.

Then there's Tabloid, which has two story threads--one focusing on the competitive nature of newspaper publishing while simultaneously investigating a murder. A decent dorama, but not as good as Fumo Chitai imo.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post, but if you're ever in the mood for lighter, more comedic fare involving politics, I'd suggest Souri to Yobanai de; for business comedy, the Shomuni series (there were three seasons; I'd highly recommend the first two; the third was just OK imo) and Sarariman Kintaro (the TBS version made in 1999 and 2000; the first two seasons only because it crashes big-time with seasons three and four).

Just listing 3 from each year:

2007 - Utahime, Galileo and Mop Girl

2008 - Ashita no Kita Yoshio, Muri na Renai, and Seigi no Mikata

2009 - Fumo Chitai (Be aware it's about 20 episodes long, but worth it!), Jin, and Love Shuffle

2010 - Shinazanmono, and Atami no Sousakan (kinda weird even for Odagiri Joe)
Only have two for 2010, haven't seen that many for last year.

Speaking of Seigi no Mikata... my sister and I keep coming back to that as one we enjoyed watching so much. Anything from either before or since that's similar in style, characters, and humor?

Hi new to this forum.I have 2 older parents 84 and 80 they watch Nhk tv.I would like to get them some more series to watch but i dont know which series new or old target an older generation.Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

My parents are both in their mid-80's, and I have the task of supplying them with all sorts of Japanese programming: dorama, movies, food and travel shows, NHK concerts, sumo . . . .

So, based on their preferences here are some suggestions:

They generally like Asadora: Oshin, by far is their favorite (it's probably their favorite dorama); they also really liked Asuka, Suzuran, Honmamon, Churasan, and Chiritotechin.

They like Taiga: Toshiie to Matsu, Aoi Tokugawa Sandai, Genroku Ryoran, and Sanada Taiheki were ones they especially liked.

Comedies they especially liked: Oyaji, Onsen E Ikou (seasons 1 and 2--this is their favorite comedy), Suekko Chounan Ane San Nin, Sweet Home, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko

Non-comedies they really liked: Kita no Kuri Kara, Shiroi Kyoto, Wataru Seken Wa Oni Bakari, Yasashii Jikan, Jyoou no Kyoushitsu

My dad loves watching jidaigeki stuff, so all the jidaigeki TV series I get him he likes. These he really liked though: Zatoichi, Momotaro Zamurai, Yagyu Ichizoku no Inbo.

And although it's a movie series, I highly recommend the Tora-san films; everyone over the age of 50 loves them.

Wow thanks so much Shin2 that will help me start finding show for them.Hopefully in the near future i can add to these recommendations, but for now as a newbie i will keep reading and learning from others as yourself.

Oh yes, Oshin, or as I call it "the Citizen Kane of asadoras", miko1117, be aware that it clocks in at 297 episodes almost twice as long as most asadora. But it's worth it!

I noticed Oshin comes in around 18gb well in reality the longer the better i suppose.
