I'm probably going to get flamed for this... but I don't care really.

I think it's funny, many of the reasons many of the give for not believing so.
I hear everything from "her eyes are TOO chinky for my tastes" (wtf is THAT?)...
to "Kelly Hu should have her workload because she's MUCH prettier." (a girl who is mixed.)
Now... a lot of the examples of the beautiful women THAT do come from the people who've ragged on her in my presence... generally look like Asian/Caucasian mixes.
It's sort of like saying "of all the women for America to push representing MY homeland... why pick the one that looks the least Caucasian?"
I'm not saying EVERYONE that dislikes her look feels that way... but I know a whole hell of a lot of people that do. _________________

altho i've seen (prolly you too, ushiro) our share of asians hotties in in our perspective areas, for some reason or another, it seems that it is fairly hard to find any 100 percenters in the media. yeah, i hate using that "M" word as well, but seems most of the stars are mixed. i'm thinking that maybe the US isn't ready for a big name to carry a film. Jacky chan is the biggest name (now anyways) from asia and still cannot throw that weight around to have a bonified hit.
But getting back to Liu, I wouldn't say her eyes are too "chinky" but I can understand why people have strong opinion of her BECAUSE of her looks. I guess in a way, it fills a need... _________________

yeah... not coincidentally either.

I dunno... I'd have to disagree here. I don't think the powers that be have even tried hard enough for making the same statement.

The Rush Hour series was pretty big man!

From where I stand, it's not that Lucy doesn't look "white" enough, but that she's just not that good looking, period. I think Ming Na-Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, and Rosalind Chao are better representatives of Asian beauty....

That's the problem with minority stars in the media.
Many of the the critics of them, both minority and not treat them as if there is some "minority measuring stick" that they have to constantly be compared to.
Although many do not like her, I feel Liu is a good actress with good 'crossover appeal'.
When she was in Charlies Angels... I remember people saying "Man! There are much more beautiful asians!!!"
FUNNY... no one looked at Drew Barrymore in the same film and said... "man there are much more beautiful white people."
But this is society as it is construct. This is just one problem I have with it. _________________
ah tomita-san! i remember her in Karete kid 2 i saw when i was a kid. had the hot for her then, still looking great now.
I first saw her back in '84 (?) when she was named the Nisei queen here in L.A., then saw her again in the Nisei Week parade as the Grand Marshall about 8-10 (?) years later... What a doll.

Louis Koo - good HK actor, bad HK singer...lol...but I don't think he sings anymore. Very very good looking
Speaking of Ming Na, here are some pics - there's not too many Chinese American mainstream actors/actresses besides her and Lucy Liu that I am aware of:

i gotta admit, i've said that. but then again, the reason (i think) we don't say "there's a hotter white chick out there" is b/c there are a lot of caucasians already working. being that there aren't that many asians that are big names, you kind of form some opinion like "there are more prettier girls (or guys for that matter) b/c, like you mentioned before, there isn't a measuring stick out there for us. i know you'll disagree, but i hope the measuring stick isn't liu. not that i don't think she is pretty/not pretty, i just feel indifferent about her looks. _________________

hehe, I kinda catch your drift there. I'm not a big fan of Lucy Liu either. I think it's great that she's a Chinese actress in America and everything though but my personal opinion of her is that she's not that great looking. She's kinda pretty but I've seen a lot more prettier Chinese girls in HK media and stuff. If I had to choose a Chinese American actress then I would pick Kelly Hu. I'm not very familar with American media anyways so like Lucy Liu and Kelly Hu are the only 2 I know of. But if I really had to choose a Chinese actress with first name Kelly then it would SO be Kelly Chen

She's pretty....but can't sing nor act
I agree with what people are saying, that it's not that Lucy Liu is not Caucasian enough to be pretty, it's just that she's just not that pretty period . On the other hand, I also agree with Ushiroyubi in that although people have different taste, there is so much appeal in the media for people of mixed origin. Sometimes, those actors/actresses/singers aren't even that good looking...I tend to believe that they are getting the attention because they diverge from the norm of appearance in the Asian society (which can be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it). However, that's just my opinion
Another thing there, you Malaysians might wanna take note, states that some reporter named Alan Koay interviewed Hung for The Star Online (one of your guys' newspapers, no?).
I predicted awhile back -- WORLDWIDE attention for Hung. Next Hong Kong? Next Nihon? Stay tuned.
