I am just curious looking at the rankings of the top 100 drama's here what are the most shocking to you?

For me I would say Gokusen II (Though I loved it it was pretty much the same as Gokusen season 1) and Also Hana Yori Dango 2 as well surprised me.

but Kimi wa Petto being in the top 20 of all time is really such a shocker to me. I was so disappointed in this drama and many of the other reviews seemed the same. Shake Head

Of course all this is completely subjective and I know many people hate my favorites as well I am just wondering what shocked others.

^ Thread title renamed to something a little more general.

That said, what's to be so shocked about?

The Top 100 lists here are popularity contests, nothing more... It's not a measure of drama or actor quality. Shake Head

The thing is, everything is a popularity contests in a way.
Even if you would for example base the top 100 on average rating, you would still get a similar list. Because dramas like GTO get "10 / 10" just as much as they get "votes".

I made a list some time ago that was like this:
Code:
avg rating
9.3  Ichi Ritoru no Namida
9.0  GTO
9.0  3 nen B gumi Kinpachi sensei 6
8.9  Nodame Cantabile
8.8  Hana Yori Dango
8.8  Sekai no chuushin de, ai wo sakebu
8.7  Summer snow
8.7  Nobuta wo Produce
8.7  Odoru Daisousasen
8.7  Shinsengumi
8.7  Pride
8.7  Kekkon Dekinai Otoko
8.7  Orange Days
8.7  Hana Yori Dango 2

Looks kind of similar to me...

True.

That said, the Top 100 should be renamed the Top 100 Most Popular, with no direct implication of quality.

lol I actually like GTO and Gokusen alot. About Hana Yori Dango, I still don't understand what's so great about it. I have watched HYD 1 and 2 and Taiwan version Meteor Garden 1 and 2 and I think they are just mediocore, not so good. I also don't understand people's hype about Nobuta wo Produce. Maybe the worst drama I have ever seen (I lied, Yukan Club is the worst drama ever), despite I really like Horikita Maki and Yamapi. Another overrated drama IMO is Good Luck! I think there are far greater KimuTaku dramas like Engine, which deserves more mention.

It also depends on the age group of the audience. Youths today are not looking for quality per se - or the same sort of "quality" is mature audiences are looking for - so it's all relative. Obviously a drama (like the Gokusen series or Hana Yori Dango) are not necessarily geared towards the older folk, but rather teens (or younger) into the 20s.

I don't think either are terrible or of bad quality. I think they're great for the age group the dramas are directed at.

Of course, some dramas are just BAD, but these also don't tend to be the popular ones.

The Top 100 on this site is derived from the votes on this site, not someone's compilation, so it's very obvious that it's based on the popular vote and doesn't need to be renamed.

I wasn't actually making a pitch to change the title... I was just making a point. Smile

Yea, I figured. I was just making the point that people shouldn't look at the list and think it's based on quality when it's always been about the dramas most voted for.

I have been using the top 100 list (mainly the top 50---before they extended it) as a neverending reccomendation list.

And to be honest, every show i've watched from the top 50 has been good, except for a few... but even then i could see why people liked them. When i look at the top lists on other sites such as mydramalist.info or dramasummaries.com much newer jdramas tend to dominate, but in jdorama.com the older shows dominate. If it weren't for the top 50 i probably would have no interest in watching jdramas before 2006.

The ones so far that i dont agree with are Densha otoko and stand up. I also feel proposal daisakusen is a little high, but it's not a bad drama.

tl;dr, jdorama list gets my approval Applaud

I think each time someone votes, the are bascially given equal weight. I wonder if the results would be any different if there was a weighting system?

Maybe we each get 1000 points for dramas and 1000 points for artists.

We can use all 1000 points on 1 show or 1 artists.

So if I realy like Ueto Aya but she already has a plenty of points, I can give her a few points to show my support, but then, I could give a lot to more Masami Nagasawa to move her way up and get Keiko Kitigawa in the top 100 by given her a ton of points. Same deal for dramas.

Of course, we would be allowed to edit our 1000 points.

While it sounds like a nice idea, I am pretty convinced it is not going to change the top list much. There are hundreds of users who have just one vote for Kimutaku or YamaP and nothing else (there is no weighting in that).

Because the problem so to speak is not with the regular users who faithfully make their vote or give a rating for a drama.
It is just that the majority of users in fact do not care as much about it. There are literally hundreds who have only seen the usual few dramas (HYD, GTO and so on), gave them a vote and a '10/10' and left this site for good. You can not really blame them, maybe for them 'Hana Yori Dango' really was the best drama they have ever seen, who knows. But since they are so many they are spoiling every rating statistic for me. Grumble

Yeah. I tend to agree. Maybe as was suggested earlier an average of all the ratings would be more useful but I can imagine it is a programming of enormous scale. Seems as it is so subjective there is no perfect solution. Still I have fun looking at peoples profiles sometimes and seeing what people who had similar picks as me also liked that I have not seen.

Exactly.

A lot of people just hit and run with their votes, which totally biases the listing.

Maybe the voting should be limited to regular, good-standing members who regularly contribute to the forum.

Not sure how the Admin could implement that... And would you re-start the Top 100 and wipe out all the previous votes?

Or maybe somehow implement the new scheme and weed out the "bogus" votes?

Ive been using this site for over a year but never ever thought about posting to the forums until a few weeks ago.

Having a posting requirement would feel too harsh. I just used this site for its list features, and im sure a lot of other users do as well.

and so much HYD hate. Really, even after seeing over 70 dramas, HYD is one of the best i've seen, and it was the drama that really got me into jdramas ;P
