Of those actresses currently working in dorama, I believe Ryoko Shinohara and Yuki Amami are the best ones out there when it comes to the lead actress category. (Eri Fukatsu would have been included with those two except I think it's been almost a couple of years since she's been in a dorama series).

yeah she's a great actress....last thing i saw her in was unfair...actually didn't think her performance there was as good as other recent ones...i preferred her perfromance in Anego even though I think Jin from KAT-TUN was horribly miscast as her co-star.

Ryoko Shinohara and Yuki Amami ...those two get my vote as currently two of the best ...and I'll add another veteran, Miho Kanno, to that list for her work in Watashitachi no Kyokasho...

This may not be the Golden Age of Dorama, but with these 3 actresses working...It's a very good age...

No, you're wrong....There have been high quality shows lately, the aforementioned Watashitachi no Kyokasho is a perfect example...

Yep, and the sun never did stop shining during the Dark Ages.

I think both of us share somewhat similar sentiments regarding the unfortunate direction dorama has taken in the 21st century, a path that has resulted in a dearth of quality series and quality acting.

That's why an accomplished lead actress like Ryoko Shinohara sticks out like a sore thumb in the current dorama environment.

indeed, the trendy commodization of young idols, both male and female, packaged and dressed in mediocre dramas to merely propel their star power seems to be the norm these days. the way the world of japanese entertainment (geinokai) works with the overly powerful influence of talent management agencies like Johnny's Jimusho has afflicted the TV viewing public with repeated performances from the same crop of young stars without much thought given to the quality of the overall project, or the quality of their acting.

yeah i've always been a fan, she is great...i even loved her in supporting roles such as Mukodono. she has style and bona fide acting skill. i haven't seen all her work but i'm generally impressed. again, although i didn't like the whole older woman - yonger guy premise of Anego, and some of the casting choices(i.e. Jin), her singular performance motivated me enough to finish watching the show.

too bad rie miyazawa doesn't act much on tv...she's beyond that for the most part i think...she does more films. she has critical acclaim on international scale now....kind of like ken watanabe now...don't think their will be too many more doramas in his future.

The irony about my respect for Ryoko Shinohara's acting is that I have yet to see her in a good dorama series (I'm not counting her cameo appearances).

Re: Rie Miyazawa--given the current state of dorama, it's probably a good thing she's not involved in that medium anymore.

Uchoten Hotel? A well scripted, well acted, immensely entertaining theatrical movie. Amazing cast. Great fun. Too bad that couldn't be turned into a dorama series.

I have seen Ryoko Shinohara make a cameo appearance in one great TV series--Odoru Daisousassen.

I haven't seen her most recent series where she plays a temp worker; I'm eager to watch that one in hopes that it might be a dorama that matches her talent.

a jewel of Japanese cinema....loved it thoroughly! the cast was absolutely amazing....i totally agree with you...it was a "rock star" showing...with some of the best known actors/actresses in Japanese entertainment.....highly recommended. if they could gather such talent for a television dorama it would be the talk of the town for years to come.

They'd have to collect some heavy-duty product placement fees to afford that cast. I can see it now: Shingo Katori carrying guests' Louis Vitton luggage. . .Takako Matsu picking up empty Suntory whiskey bottles while cleaning rooms. . .Shiro Ito using Shiseido cream the next time he decides to pancake his face. . .Koji Yakusho coordinating an entire banquet using his iphone. . .Ryoko Shinohara whipping out a Trojan condom for her next john. . . .

for sure, you'd have to shell out some serious yen for them all to be friends...
