Synopsis:
Forced out of his research group after conflicts with his colleagues, Ogawa Takanobu takes up an offer to teach at a girls' high school in Nara. When taking roll call on the first day one of his students, Hotta Ito, sneaks into class late, claiming a bogus excuse--that she got a ticket after trying to park her deer in front of the train station. He makes immediate enemies with Hotta when he tells his superiors about her tardiness and attitude. In the following days, he begins to notice something unusual about Hotta, but he can't seem to put his finger on it.

With an odd group of colleagues who live together with him, Ogawa slowly accustoms to life in slow-paced Nara, where there seem to be as many deer as people. Walking through Nara Park one day, he begins to befriend the local deer population, feeding them rice wafers. After being confronted by a talking deer who commandeers him to prevent the destruction of Japan, he fails in his first mission and the talking deer exacts punishment--looking into the mirror the next day, he discovers he has turned into a deer from the shoulders up. Ogawa slowly begins to piece the puzzle together: the talking deer, the mysterious student, and a recent series of earthquakes that could spell doom for Japan...

The 1st ep. is a little slow, but my suggestion for anyone interested is don't give up on the show just yet. Ep. 2 is defintitely much better and this show is very unpredictable (I haven't seen anything similar to this). Siantut is subbing and subs is up to ep. 2 already.

It's an interesting show. A little slow, yeah, but interesting enough. And also one of the weirdest plots I've ever seen.

*stampedes?*

It may be slow, and... you know, I still think the writer of this drama also believes in the Penguin Conspiracy. But he had to use deer, he couldn't outright use penguins, that would have been too obvious and also dangerous for his health (the penguins strike swiftly, ask JFK).

I like it, it's somewhat odd and bizarre, but... I like it odd and bizarre every now and then. This and "Ashita no Kita Yoshio" are currently my favorites.

As for the girls' school... I still think the uniforms in Guren Onna are cuter.

This is actually NOT a high school drama.

Just watched ep. 3 and I've got to say this is now by far my favorite drama of the season. I don't like some of the production aspects such as cinematography, direction, and Tamaki-kun's acting (he doesn't play the neurotic character very well); but the story is really the main attraction here. Just when I thought I had the story figured out, there's always some surprise at the end of each episode to pique my interest again. The script is based on a novel which won a Naoki award, and now I'm starting to see why.

For those comtemplating watching this show, I'd suggest giving it 3 episodes before making any judgement.

That's going to by my series, with several seasons. I think season 2 will be "The Amazing Beer Man goes to America".

But anyway...

Damn, I hate waiting for the next episode. And you know, I absolutely love how they go into Japanese mythology and history with this. Rats, deer, kitsune! YES! Visiting the old tombs! YES! Curious when the first tanuki will appear. There has to be one. There has to be chaos. Hotta maybe? No, she's too dead serious for being a tanuki. Tanuki like to cause mischief. That said, I'm really curious about Hotta's connection to the deer. There has to be one, there are too many strange coincidences. Is her father the deer? Or is she one? I mean, we already saw a fox in human form (even though I think that Ayase's Fujiwara is better looking). Oh dear, maybe Fijiwara's a tanuki? Or a kitsune? Oioioioioi!
