Certainly they are more forgiving of the flaws than we are it seems. I skimmed through the last three pages of the discussion at D-Addicts and it looks like while most point out some flaws, they put the Ruka-Takeru relationship as the positive which makes the drama good in their eyes. That's only the last three pages, so obviously that's not going to give a good idea of the overall consensus there. I do agree that the Ruka-Takeru relationship is what kept this drama up, but I don't agree that's it so much a positive that it overrides all the negatives.
Especially when the negative is completely interwoven into the story...
Well, some parts of it still ended up in fantasyland, while some parts were just resolved in the easiest way possible in the span of an hour.

- That opening scene with Sosuke's letter? Not as if we needed more confirmation of his dramatic turnaround. We get it, he reformed by dying; let's move on. I can just imagine all the oohs and aahs this got from every fangirl watching.
- They resolved Eri's and Ogurin's story in the lamest way possible. It's still resolution, but it feels so hollow.
- Takeru explaining his situation to Ruka; it's a bit late for this now, but as a whole their story was always more entertaining and dramatic than anyone else in this whole drama.
- I haven't counted how many times Michiru says 'thank you' and 'sorry' in the whole series, but it sure seems like a whole lot. Must have been hard to write her.
- Ruka must have had some training to be able to survive a head-on collision with a Mack with just a scratch. Takeru probably got cushioned by all the additional hair under the helmet.
I'm still wondering what the special episode will show. A prequel? An epilogue? I'll watch it, but I don't expect to be astonished by what will happen in that episode. I stopped holding my breath a long time ago.

As I predicted: ten episodes of teasing and suspense, then a near-totally unsatisfying ending...

I fast-forwarded through that BS... I wasted more than enough time watching that part of the story.

Yeah, that was a joke... More un-creative writing... The writer(s) just gave up... And not just on this story.

Absolutely.
The interactions between those two were the very best points of the drama, hands down: they were heartfelt, sympathetic, and believable... If it wasn't for those two, the drama would've tanked after a couple of episodes in my view.

Probably the most disappointing character in the entire drama... I stopped caring about her around Episode 5...

Probably more crap to gloss over Sosuke's deviant behavior.

I'm not entirely disappointed with the serie. I mean, a dramatic finale doesn't really make a serie good or bad for me. To me, it's the overall message and how well the storyline comes together. Last Friends is not one of the best series out there but it is one of the good ones. I can criticize all I want to but at the end of the day, I would watch it again. It's not perfect and I wish I can change many things in the serie, but I'm okay with how it ended. I guess, I'm an easy watcher.
If a movie will come out, I hope they will have entirely different storyline.
Finished watching the final ep with subs.. My thoughts on the ep and the series
Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:
Started watching the drama because of the terrific cast (Juri chan, Eita, Masami ).. First few episodes were interesting but the drama lost its steam somewhere in the middle.. Then it felt as if they were putting real effort to pull the drama through to the end.. The only bright spots being the acting of Juri chan and Eita and their characters..
Ep11 has been a big disappointment for me.. It really felt as if the writer/director wanted to end it someway or the other.. Sousuke does all the DV crap and gets a lame death? C'mon guys, what the hell was that? Eri-Ogurin making up and getting together in a jiffy? Michiru was pathetic throughout the series but it reached its pinnacle in this episode.. And the climax is something that I couldn't understand.. Really disappointed by the series esp given the cast on hand!
On a positive note, Juri chan looked more feminine (or was it only me?) and the best in this episode.. Also loved the Yamaha tourer bike that Takeru borrowed

Hmm.. Everyone is entitled to having their opinion, but for me the drama was a disappointment.. And to be honest, I didn't get the overall message whatever it was that they were trying to convey.

Rumi growing up and getting confused as to who her real mom and dad are? j/k
I adore Takeru (and Eita's portrayal of him) and all, but goodness... I wish he wasn't there at the end so the writers could give Ruka and Michiru some closure with a heart to heart talk. Ruka's had it with everyone important in her life so far: her dad, who probably passed it on to her family; Takeru, who so dramatically yelled out how he'll accept her no matter what; and now Eri, in a short but sweet scene. Takeru knew to leave them alone when they kidnapped Michiru from Sousuke before. He also knew that both of them were very clearly bugged about one another. And what, he just sat there like a third wheel?
Michiru and Ruka are supposed to have some epic friendship since they've known each other for years, and yet they're the only ones without any closure or understanding of one another. I hope the SP touches upon this, otherwise I think hammering their friendship from long ago into our faces was completely useless and unnecessary.

Just finished episode 10. Since it looks like everyone is using spoiler tags, so will I:
Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:
This is how I see the series/how it should have been. Feels like the writers got together in the beginning and asked "How do we make a series that will win an award?"...."Let's cram as many issues in as we can!" Chopping down many of the periphial issues and side plots would have made this series much better. Too much ambition, not enough talent.
Ruka: The main focus of the story IMO. Everyone's story seems to affect hers to some extent, and move it along. The best parts of the drama were hers, and that isn't because I'm a fan/devotee of Juri-chan. The gender identity disorder parts, specifically, were ho-hum and conventional, but the strength came when she was dealing with the personal issues of it, ie. the self-imposed loneliness, being so close to the one she loved but no closer, forcing herself to accept it as good enough, etc. These issues weren't specific to her condition, but something all of us could experience, and I thought they were done well. The actual lesbian/gid story was okay, but this is from an American perspective where homosexuality has become mainstream rather than outcast. I'd have to say her most powerful scene to this point was after she fought Sousuke. (The scene itself was a little stretch, though. Ruka is suppose to be aggressive, and physical enough to control a motorcross bike at a male level. How she could be beat by a scrawny runt like Sousuke makes me scratch my head.) The brief scene in the clothing store where she completely broke down from the shame was about close to a perfectly acted scene as you can get. Very good acting by Juri-chan on that part where expression was everything.
Takeru: I see him as the backbone of the series. He's not the central character, but he holds it all together. They failed on his personal story, still not resolving it at episode 10, but the background did act as the glue for the separate plots of the series. Had the writer/writers decided to centralize the story on Ruka and Takeru's issues, it would have been much better. I also have a newfound respect for Eita's acting after watching this.
Eri and Ogurin: Side characters/comic relief. They're there just so the the series doesn't start tunnelvisioning. A pleasant, unimportant yet needed addition.
Michiru: Now we get to the bottom. This girl's learning curve must be a horizontal line. I got tired of caring for her after four episodes. By the sixth, I was cheering Sousuke on for beating her.(Guess I'm an oni) She never matured as a character. At first I thought her domestic violence story was going to support Ruka's development, but that never happened. What does it say when her and Sousuke's plotline can be chopped to five total minutes, or removed altogether, and you wouldn't have to rewrite the script to compensate?
Sousuke: Speaking of dead weight, now we get to nutcase. No acting required here. No personality, no plot-the actor needs to fire his agent for getting him a role that could have been filled by a cardboard cutout. In Hollywood terms, if Ruka is the "breakout" role that all young actors aspire for, Sousuke is the "soft porn/break the typecasting" role. Why didn't anyone call the police on him? Why didn't anyone beat the crap out of him? The guy wasn't threatening at all. Halfway through they added his interaction with the little boy. I guess they were trying to soften his image, but based on who he was, I interpreted it as him "building his family". In other words, had the mother not returned, he would have taken the kid as his property. About the only thing believable about Sousuke was that he can spend all the time stalking and not lose his job because he was working for the city government. Then he finally kills himself. Am I suppose to feel compassion for him looking at the pictures? Hey nutjob, you're not lonely because no one will be your friend. You're lonely because you're a nutjob! I must be an oni because I laughed when he killed himself. Now they can bury you alongside your storyline that died in episode 1.
I hope Juri-chan wins an award for her acting, but more because her acting made the role rather than the other way around. There is some great acting from her, and I'm glad she took a role like this. As for the series, crank down on the ambition and up the effort. So-so at best.

From watching episode 11, seemed to me the story has ended (be it a good or bad ending...). I totally couldn't understand how a movie/SP can be made out of this... and I heard all the cast are returning.. seemed like I am smelling something totally unrealistic is going to happen in the SP.. Definitely going to worsen the already bad ending... or rather almost bad series. _________________

That was great... Pretty much a summarization of what's been continually said over the past 11 weeks.
The Sosuke paragraph was gold.... Gold!

I agree... Her character was CLEARLY the most developed, sympathetic, and evolved of them all... And I'd have to say the only person in the cast and production crew to merit an award... The writer(s) need to watch other dramas themselves to see how it's done or go to night school...

Just watched the last episode of Last Friends.
First time I think I've ever watched a show from beginning to end with regularity (I don't think I've ever seen a show as it came out like this, Jdrama or otherwise). For that, it was entertaining - waiting each week to see what came next.
By the middle of the 4th episode, or so, I had really tempered my expectations, so I didn't find it to be nearly as much of a let down as some other people seem to. It was pretty much what I expected.
I thought that Ueno Juri really did a great job, for the most part.. as did most of the other actors, given a pretty limited set of writings. Sadly, I don't know if anyone really got to play out their potential here... especially Asami, Masami and Ryo (I haven't seen these two before)... they really got screwed.
But, in the end, the acting for the parts they got was pretty decent. Now the parts varied from decent to suck. I think Michiru's part was just horrible. I can count on both hands the number of times I cared about her during the series - which is really sad considering what she went through. She should have been the focus - she started the series and ended it, but never was anything more than a poorly fleshed out idea, let alone a memorable, lovable, hatible, or otherwise interesting character.
I think it was okay for Sousuke to not be overly nuanced. He actually had a pretty limited role in 'teaching' Michiru (even though the writing really failed to get her to understand).
Eri was sadly underused. She had a kind of strength that Ruka pretended to. It wasn't a faultless strength, but had the potential to provide wonderful character interaction. Bleh. I think she may be the character I'm most disappointed with how she was used.
Takeru was a good guy. He wasn't overly deep (even though they tried). Eita was really sweet in the role - always saying the right things, acting selflessly where appropriate. <yawn>.
Ruka was another well of untapped potential. Her story was interesting and socially relevant and it was only scratched from the surface. Juri managed some brilliant acting in some scenes and some totally forgettable ones in others. For the fan, it's a great series for her as she became the unintended focus, in my opinion.
Now, as for Ep 11:
Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:
Nothing surprising here: Rushed and comprehensive - the hallmark of a last ep. for an unfocused series. Of specific mention are Ruka's speech - it had to be good, or the series would suffer. And it was The family & friends support, all very sweet and nice.
Eri and Ogurin's marriage: Are you kidding me? <sigh> Talk about glossing over and wrapping things up for last-episode's sake. Ogurin's little speech to Eri in the airport was kinda cute - definitely reminded me of Kai from Orange Days on the beach - except Kai's declaration was fantastic and so much more fearless, but that's a different review Really tragic, in my opinion that Eri had to end like that.
The pre-accident truck/motorcycle/dish-washing montage had to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. It went on far too long. I was sincerely hoping that absolutely none of those items would intersect.. it would have been infinitely more entertaining that the "oh my" suspense that the accident carried. Kind of insulting, to be honest.
Same thing with the pregnancy and delivery. I felt like it was a waste of time.
However, the decision by Ruka and Takeru to help out and be involved in Rumi's life was a really cool idea. I liked the beach scene with Ruka and Takeru a lot, even if Takeru's declaration was somewhat anticlimactic. I thought the 'morning after' shot with Ruka's hand on Takeru was a really nice touch and explains a lot of the femininity (I would call it tenderness) that Ruka displayed in the last ep. that others have mentioned. She was actually the character that grew the most..
I thought the scene with the three (four) of them sitting on the bench at the beach was really warm and fuzzy and just fine.
Masami actually held the record for most times in the last episode making me choke up while watching it. She has a good upset face.
I'll miss the characters, perhaps Takeru the most, but I'm pretty glad it's over.
Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:
I have no idea why they would do a "special" episode next week. It seems really lame. And honestly.. the ending was fine - what the hell else do we need?

A couple of cheap, final episode suspense points thrown in for good measure, IMO... Like something was REALLY gonna go wrong...

<sigh> You're completely correct. Well, it's good to know it's not so different from American TV. I'm so glad when they voluntarily decide to end a show here - you know, before it sucks. _________________
