I've never been a big fan of these "Taiga" shows, I've only seen a few eps here and there of a couple of shows. I wonder if I'm missing anything, these shows seem to be popular.

Have you actually seen any of Atsu-hime? According to Jun (you know which Jun) Atsu-hime is historically accurate. It's just focusing on a particular person who happens to be female Smile

Yeah, I know that the Taigas are history-based... I was just making a dig a those who pissed and moaned about Taigas... Until this particular female-driven Taiga. Bleah

I would say yes, I have seen a few documentaries on Japanese history and have enjoyed them. But none of the Taiga shows have caught my attention. I did see the first couple of eps of Atsu-hime but then I stopped watching. Well, the DDLs were removed.

Since there's already been one thread started and some discussion, might as well start a full-blown thread. This is just a basic synopsis and the cast:
Tenchijin (Vnl, Tenchijin?) is the 48th NHK Taiga drama. It is scheduled to premiere on NHK on January 4, 2009, and will consequently air every Sunday at 20:00 to 20:44 till December 13, 2009. The story centers on the life of the 16th century samurai Naoe Kanetsugu.

The drama series is intended to depict the love and righteousness of Japan, which have been slowly disappearing in current Japanese society. The story is based on the novel Tenchijin by Masashi Hisaka and is being adapted for screen by scriptwriter Eriko Komatsu.

The protagonist of the drama, Naoe Kanetsugu, was taught by Uesugi Kenshin in his youth that to conquest the world is a trifle matter, but what matters is to live one's life with righteousness. After Uesugi's death, Naoe supports Uesugi Kagekatsu, who came to hold the destiny of Echigo province and lives righteous life.

But you've also got Hiroshi Abe, Reiko Takashima and Saki Aibu, so hopefully, it'll balance out. Sweat

Do these shows typically last for a year? I realize it's only one ep a week, but it seems extremely long.

    Don't forget Nagasawa Masami. Bonk

    I'm looking forward to seeing:
    Tokiwa Takako
Koizumi Kotaro (I find him endearing for some reason)
    Tanaka Misako
    Azuma Mikihisa

    Masami Nagasawa

That's the name that stopped me in my tracks.

What the heck. Maybe if I go into it with lowered expectations I won't be disappointed.

But boy, the rest of the cast looks terrific.
