Reviving this thread since I just started watching it, up thru episode 4 so far. Everybody talks about Mana Ashida, and justifiably so, but I think Yuko Tanaka has just been outstanding!! I have always liked her going clear back to Oshin, but in this drama she's able to convey more emotions without saying a word than anybody I've seen in a long time!!

I like how they devoted most of episode 8 to showing us Rena/Tsugumi's earlier life and why her Mom turned out the way she did. Ono Machiko is very good showing the change in her. Doesn't excuse what she did, but it would have been easy to just paint that character as a one-dimensional low-life bitch and leave it at that. Good job by the writer!
