Is this a historical epic like Toshie and Matsu...or fictional?

Greg-san, Musashi is a must-read if you want to understand Japanese society.

Miyamoto Musashi was Japan's greatest samurai.

50/50, Greg: It uses Yoshikawa Eiji's original book as it's baseline, but extrapolates the story to involve the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate....

Check out the Musashi thread in the drama section... Big Grin

I'll try to get around to it...but my wife gets bored with the historical dramas. I ended up watching T&M by myself.

Greg, ol' boy, try out the Inagaki Hiroshi's Samurai Trilogy (Criterion DVD) starring the great Mifune Toshiro... It's a winner.

I'm watching Kawa Itsuka Umi e (A River Flowing Back to the Ocean) and I'm having a ball with it.

It's 6 hour long specials, loosley connected by a bit of fantasy about a glass ball that different people pluck out of the river, and the ball has an effect on their love lives.

Okay, it's a silly device... but the individual stories have been great.

Actually the one cast featuring Eri Fukatsu and Santamaria Yusuke come back for 3 different episodes at different points in their lives. But the other episodes have completely unrelated casts and storylines.

The comedy with Ken Watenabe as the failed white collar worker trying to run a country inn is hilarious.

Saw ending chapter of "Last Present"... it's less sad than the one in Bara no Jujika, but quite satisfying.

Right now I'm watching "Love Letters" with Watabe Atsuro and Mizuno Miki, and it's reminding me of why I started watching Japanese Doramas in the first place.

This is just a great great show.

It's a tear jerker, and I don't see any way for them to come up with a happy ending (though I've learned not to underestimate Japanese TV writers in that regard) but it's original, and it's really well done. And I find myself really looking forward to the day's episode.
