One episode in and so far I think I'm gonna enjoy it.
Good luck, for me, the two most disgusting characters I've ever seen in doramas are Bengoshi Kuzu and Stresseman from Nodame Cantible If it hadn't been for Reiko Takashima and Hideaki Ito, I don't think I could have finished this one. :bleh: [/list:u]

I totally agree with Stressesman from Nodame. :bleh: :bleh: :bleh: He's one of the reasons I hesitate to watch Nodame, even tho it's one of my favs. :pout:

Disgusting?

Okay, I was a bit put off by Takenaka's portrail of Stressman. Probably a bit insulted by it. You know, playing the foreigner as a horney drunken skirtchaser, in a fright wig. A bit over the top in terms of being racist.

And Koide Keisuke's performance as the gay percussionist was probably a bit over the top for most of the gay audience.

It was a cartoon. It was two, and in some cases one dimensional. But I didn't find it disgusting. Just... boring.

But in the case of Toyokawa Etsushi's character in "Bengoshi..." So far, I find him interesting. In the world of simple, two dimensional characters that seem to be taking over Japanese Dramas (man, they're getting conservative over there) he's added something different. Something interesting.

He's a drunk. (His character is. I don't know anything about Toyokawa.)

And not the simplistic, comic book, falling down drunk.

He's using the red cheeks, the broken capillaries in the nose... and the bandaids on the face to tell you that this guy drinks too much... parties too much... and there are consequences.

Which explains (without going into a long set of speeches) why a lawyer that sharp is still working at a small firm... chasing any case he can get.

It's not an "attractive" character. That's what Ito's there for. Give the kids a pretty boy to stare at.

But in terms of storytelling. I like the idea of juxtaposing the stary-eyed Ito with the disillusioned Toyokawa.

Exprssionless? :headscratch: I thought some of his expressions were hilarious!

Re. Stresseman...

I'm with Geezer on this one. The whole drama was an over-the-top slapstick comedy, so I just accepted him as he was. The character annoyed me at first though.

A.D.

I thought of Takenaka's Stressman much the same way I thought about Mickey Rooney's Mr. Yunioshi in "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

A cheap, stereotypical, characterization... by an actor I'd always thought better of.

Nothing to get all huffed and chuffed about. Just kind of a disappointment.

People forget it's based on a manga...and Nodame Live Action definitely made it a point to try to translate those elements found in the comic on to the silver screen.

Oh man, now that was blatantly racist... It was like something from those WW2 films with the squinty eyes, glasses, and buck teeth.

Shameful. :shakehead:

just completed busu no hitomi koishiteru (after a LONG hiatus).....was really quite disappointed by the dorama

it had an interesting concept but failed due to the weakness of the script and acting in particular. Tomoko's effort is worth mentioning but Goro and the supporting cast never really built the camaraderie necessary for the dorama to take off. Goro's performance seemed very wooden and the script never really provided much for the cast to work with. Compounded with the fact that many of the 'comedic' moments were not really that funny and seemed quite forced even for the cast, this dorama never quite reached its full potential

Yea, that's true, but I still found him gross. And not his character... just him physically. Sorry for not making that clear.
