I'm now going to embark on Shinsengumi. I looked over the cast and saw a lot of familiar faces, so I'm excited about this one.
Isn't this your first Taiga? As is sometimes the case, they don't follow the historical facts real close, and I think Shingo was miscast as Isami, but I liked it for the most part.

A taiga refers specifically to an historical drama? If so, then yesh, this would be my first. _________________

Yup. This from Wiki:
Quote:
Taiga drama (̓h}, Taiga dorama, literally Big River Drama) is the name NHK gives to the annual, year-long historical fiction television series it broadcasts in Japan.
This year's taiga is Atsu Hime which AD is in the process of watching right now.

Speaking of Atsu Hime I tuned in last night, they're up to epi 36 here and there was actually some kind of sword fight going on. Maybe I shouldn't have given up on this one.

I have Atsu Hime (not all, obviously) as well, but I want to wait until I have the entire series before starting it.
What are long dramas like Churasan called? I thought Taiga referred to the longer series in general.

I thought you saw Musashi a while back...
On Topic: I watched the first half of the first episode of Shinsengumi yesterday. Lots of action, but there were ever so many introductions that I lost track. _________________

That's pretty standard for a Taiga. With 49 episodes you have a LOT of characters and with a period piece everybody tends to look alike so it can be pretty confusing at first but eventually you should be able to sort things out a little better.
Re Chursan: Those are called asadoras(morning drama). Honmamon was also an asadora. They're shown in the mornings in Japan from Monday thru Saturday and run for 6 months. The Taigas take almost a whole year.

Yeah, you'll get that with Atsu-hime too, especially since (for me) you don't recognise many actors AND they are all wearing similar costumes and samurai haircuts. But you do get used to it

At least with Atsu-hime I have Aoi-chan, whom I'm a huge fan of. In Shinsengumi I still need to find my muse. _________________

Episode 5 and 6 (or was it 6 and 7?) of 14-sai no Haha. It's so funny how Tanaka Misako and Namase Katsuhisa are married in this drama and he has a crush on her in the first episode of Brother Beat. And I'm really disliking Kitamura Yasushi because of his role as the editor of the trashy magazine and as the jerk in Yaoh. _________________
Finished epi 2 of Shinsengumi! I really liked this episode. Good, solid, promising start.
So I was doing the math, and watching Shinsengumi is equivalent to watching 4 dramas. Mebbe I should watch another one at the same time... _________________

Stumbled across Taiheiki(1991). Didn't know anything about it, but I was attracted by how old it is and its popularity. Sounds like it has a good story too from reading wiki entries. First episode is pretty good so far, not too difficult to understand. There are quite a few interesting characters too.
