After my little Miki Nakatani binge I looked at my "to watch" spindle, and since it was pretty much empty I decided to watch a couple of orphans. (Shows where the subbers have quit.)
The first was; Kiina
http://www.jdorama.com/drama.1368.htm
I figured it would be worth it because it's a Kanno Miho show... but I was wrong. I don't know. Maybe it's because it's a detective show aimed at 12 year old girls. I guess it's just another case of me being in the wrong demographic. For whatever reason, I thought the mysteries were dumb, and the solutions rather simplistic. In short... I thought it a bore. I doubt I'll go back if the rest of the episodes are ever subbed.
So I moved on to: Room Of King
http://www.jdorama.com/drama.1345.htm
This one either sucks, or it's just too hip for me to get all of the jokes. I'm leaning toward... it sucks. Another show where I won't be holding my breath waiting for the rest of the subs to emerge. I watched 6 of the 9 episodes and I couldn't care less how it turns out.
Then I got lucky. I was wandering around one of the streaming sites looking for something interesting and I came across;
Gift
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Gift
This is a Kimura Takuya drama from 1997, and it was like turning your face into a cool evening breeze after a long hot day.
Say what you want about Kimura as an actor, his popularity means the best writers and the best supporting actors want to work with him.
This one sports a hot young girl named Shinohara Ryoko as the comic relief hooker. Kobayashi Satomi as a semi evil psychic. And Baisho Mitsuko in what was probably her last role as a high heel wearing super cop, before entering the ranks of the official Japanese TV grandmas.
After watching the first episode on the streaming site I checked d-addicts and that's where the luck kicked in for a second shot. The torrent was still alive. It took a week to download it, but I've got it now and I'm two episodes in.
So far, it was well worth the wait. _________________ Manga is to Literature

I enjoyed Kairi's story aka "suicidal girl".

For what little it's worth, I'll join the chorus and say "Love Shuffle" gets better.
I know I rather disliked the first couple of episodes. I found the premise and the characters tired and shallow.
But somewhere toward the end of #3, and into #4 I found myself getting interested. I can't peg exactly where it was, or exactly what happened to change my opinion of the show. But from then on I found myself really looking forward to seeing each following installment. And by the end I was very happy that I'd stuck with it.

Exactly... But I'm gonna try to see it through to the end.
At least it isn't Gokusen.

The drama was reasonably entertaining, but I think it was several episodes too long... The final pairings were pretty much predictable after episode 6...
Overall, I'd give it a 7.5/10. |
Addendum: I was quite impressed with Tanihara Shosuke's performance (yet again)... I guess I'd better (finally) watch Mop Girl.
EDIT: Word is that he'll be a rival (?) conductor in the upcoming Nodame movies....
