i agree....there is probably a better j-drama out there too...
but it also depends on what someone considers quality j-drama based on experience on how much they watched, and the depth, storyline, character development, creative script, etc.....
a lot of what i have seen lately, has been......so so....some bad, some ok, a few even great....
again, it depends on personal opinion on a j-drama on what is considered the good, the bad, and the ugly....lol
but the majority usually rules and it shows on the tv ratings....but not everyone will agree on how it does.
something popular with high ratings doesn't necessarily mean it is a great j-drama to all....but to most.. :bonk:
I think you bring up some very valid points. High popularity does not always equate to high quality. The most watched dorama of all time was Oshin, with a peak rating of 62.9%; yet it wasn't even rated among the Top 20 best shows of all time in a 2001 survey of Japanese viewers. Evaluating a show is such a subjective process and the vocabulary used to describe shows is so subjective as well: great, good, bad, average, best, worst--impossible to achieve consensus on any of these adjectives. Which brings me to Long Vacation, a series which has been discussed a lot on this web site. I have to say I'm in the minority re: this series. I thought it was only pretty good, nothing more, nothing less. I am not a Takuya Kimura fan, so that certainly plays a part in my opinion of the series; however, I am a big Tomoko Yamaguchi fan, and that also has an influence of how I regard LV. BTW, in case anybody cares :usuck: , I have seen one Takuya Kimura series that I would rate as great--Sora Kara Furu Ichi-Oku no Hoshi--where, imo the performances of Sanma Akashiya and Eri Fukatsu and the strong script made it great in spite of Kimura. Oh, yeah, there are two Tomoko Yamaguchi series I would rate as great--Ohsama no Restaurant and Sweet Home. None of these last 3 dorama I have mentioned garnered the high ratings as LV did, and none of them are as fawned over as LV is, but for me, they are among close to a dozen series  that imo are better than LV. For better or worse, subjectivity at work.
