Well..... What can you say about a series when even Ryoko Yonekura isn't pretty enough to make it watchable?
I think "Nyokei Kazoku" is one of those dramas that you're either going to get into it, or you're going to absolutely hate it. I have to admit after about episode 3 I was thinking, "Geez, except for Ryoko, all these characters are back stabbing assholes that should be tied to an anthill and covered with honey" But I kept watching and eventually got into it.

If you think that's bad, try "Kurokawa no Techou", also starring Yonekura Ryoko.

Yet she won an award for her role in that drama. Sweat

It's quite possible that Teppan Shoujo Akane is one of the best dramas ever made. Good

A really terrible drama is not always a reflection on the actor's ability. Pat Pat Pat

I went past "Nyokei Kazoku" a little too quickly, simply labeling it "gawdawful", and I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression.

My distain for this series has little or nothing to do with the actors and actresses. I'm a huge fan of both Yonekura, and Seto. And Reiko Takashima did what she could wth the part of the evil, wicked, evil, eldest sister. Who's evil.

My problem is with the genre.

If any of you have ever read novels by writers like Judith Krantz or Danielle Steel and said to yourself when finished: Mmmm. That was tastey. I think I'll read another. Then A) You might really like "Nyokei Kazoku". And B) Shame on you. (That said, these two women sell more books world wide than almost any other writer.)

The books are almost always the same, simplistic, over the top, soap operatic bits of fluff with strikingly one dimentional characters.

The heroine is almost always a beautiful young shop girl born on the wrong side of the tracks, but through pluck and general all around goodness of spirit (and a rockin' bod) makes her way to the top.

Ah, but there are battles to be fought along the way. There's always a rich, evil family, or a rich evil corporation that does everything and anything it can think of to keep our plucky heroine down. They lie to her, they lie about her, they hit her, they try to kill her, they call her hurtful names... it's just heartbreaking. (Or stomach turning depending on your tastes.)

In the books everyone makes a point of having sex with everyone else, and they went light on that in Nyokei (because Japanese TV has become rather prudish of late) but all the rest of the banal, overused, hackneyed plot points are there in this series.

It's a genre that demands you root for the humorless and stupid... and it makes my teeth itch.

Just finished episode 6 of "Nodame Cantabile". The Chinese subs will probably be available in a couple days, and the English subs in a week. Until then...
