The blurb for this show goes something like this:
When a small town decides to tear down one of its grammar schools, a group of former students return to dig up the time capsule their Brass Band had buried 15 years before. Since many of the former students failed to return to claim the items they�fd buried as children, Takashima Masanobu is assigned the task (since he works at City Hall and has access to the town�fs records) of tracking down his old school chums and returning their items to them.
That�fs what happens. That�fs how the show starts. That�fs not what the show is about.
This is a show with a backbone. A theme. And the theme is; Loneliness. It examines the loneliness of everyday people, from several different generations and social backgrounds�c
WITHOUT BECOMING MAUDLIN! Without resorting to melodrama.
Without becoming a weepy, simplistic, soap opera.
The show looks at several different people, and peels away the facade. The Salaryman with 30 years invested in a company�cwho finds himself being pushed out. The beautiful, intelligent, self assertive TV News Woman living a domestic nightmare. The well brought up High School girl who�fs willing to prostitute herself with middle aged strangers partly for the money, but mostly because she wants someone to pay attention to her. The former child prodigy who couldn�ft live up to her early success and has retreated into the safety of her parent�fs home. The rock solid, core family�c that�fs actually a disaster just beneath the surface.
Since this is an older show, it isn�ft a beautiful, wide screen, High Def, visual masterpiece. The sets are spare and simple. The outdoor shots of the small town they live in are washed out and generic (It helps that it was filmed during the winter.). There�fs nothing all that �gspecial�h about the town�c or the people who live in it. They�fre just people, living isolated lives�c searching for ways to combat the loneliness.
I know. I�fve made it sound depressing. But that�fs just my lack of skill as a writer. This is a very well written and acted show. And rather than being sad�c it makes you root for the people you�fve come to know.
If I were trying to sell this show, the old line I�fd use in the adds would be: �gLife is what happens, while you�fre waiting for your real life to begin.�h
