I too was a little taken aback when Honami's sister Naomi (I don't know why the subtitles don't get her name right...everyone calls her Naomi, and it makes sense, since the combination Honami/Naomi is so euphonious) at the very end reveals that she too has had plastic surgery and married some handsome blond foreigner.

I don't think that was the case at all, Harriet... I think it was more of a final jab and the whole fairy tale stereotype...

Yup. We never actually see her go along with it.

Ahhhh... her signature outfit! So grand. She can actually pull yellow off!

I'm watching Pretty Girls right now and this is another must see for you.

I have not been this engrossed since Crying Out Love. But this is a comedy. In addition to Ryoko's usual great performance, Inamora is outstanding. Applaud

And I still love it. I already watched it twice and going for another round trip. I just can't get enough of Izumi's character. It's so refreshing and heartwarming. It sure has raised her in my actor's stable to the front row.
It's Ok, BMW, both Ryokos are secure in my front row too. Victory! Peace!

Help! I am confused. At the end, doesn't the sister look different, with a different face? Did I not read the ending correctly?

Yes, that picture. From the back she looks like Naomi, is wearing her clothes, and she's also wearing glasses, so I figured it was Naomi with her new face. I thought the fairy tale was, as their father says early on, very autobiographical.

Hmm. I interpreted that closing shot as more tongue-in-cheek than actual reality. Smile

Yeah, but we concluded that those who had any interest in seeing this drama have done so already, so it was okay. Smile

I am almost embarrassed to admit it, but I watch my own chosen "highlights" of this show every night and have done so since I first saw it. I'm sort of addicted and never get tired of it.

That's why I am surprised that people see the ending differently from the way I see it, because I feel I know it so well, every nuance. I don't think it could really be tongue in cheek, because even though the series is funny, nothing is not a believable outgrowth of the individual personalities involved in the story.

Honami acts a bit zany at times, but we learn that it's because she played the clown all her life to compensate for her perceived ugliness. I always feel she is very true to herslf, and most of the time she speaks truth straight from the heart.

So it would be very startling to have the ending of the little fairy tale book be a complete lie. What would be the point? It's not only the illustration in the book, it's Naomi's new face...we see it. Seeing is believing.

Complete lie? Head Scratch

I guess it was just open for interpretation, because I don't think that scene suggested anything definite. I mean, if she DID get a make over, why not go all the way through? Why keep the hair, the glasses, the mole? Why use the exact same face?

And the sister was always confident, wasn't she? Why suddenly follow suit?

I personally believe the ending wasn't important at all. I mean, at this point, the plot has ended. Those who made the drama just wanted to end on a funny note. Whatever it's supposed to mean is up in the air. But it doesn't really matter.
