Japan's cellphone technology will always be ahead. Its not like companies outside of Japan don't have the technology yet (3G is readily available but not used everywhere, 4G is here but will probably take a long time before we use it), I think its more to do with the needs of the general popluation...the regular person is just not as high-tech-gadget-crazy as the Japanese.

I remember the last time I went to Japan...must be 6-8yrs ago when colour screen cellphones were the norm, yet back here we're still using non-colour screens for another couple of years.

There you go again Tu_tricky...... Although it makes perfect sense to use horse hair. Look at the size of the darn thing!

Get Ready for Water-Powered Cell Phones

In 2010 your mobile phone may be powered by water. Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced Thursday that it has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that runs on H20.

"When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas," explained Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' research center. "The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power." Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung's needs only water. <br>

Since the micro-fuel cell can generate up to three watts of electricity, it could be used in mobile devices, the company said. The new fuel cell could power a handset for 10 hours, twice as long as rechargeable batteries.

Oh said water-powered handsets are expected to hit the market by 2010. "If the user uses the phone for four hours a day on average, they would have to change the hydrogen cartridge about every five days," Oh said. "Later handsets will be developed that don't need the hydrogen cartridges to be changed, and would only need to be filled with water."

Samsung Electro-Mechanics unveiled the new technology at the 2007 Korea Electronics Show at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province.

Critical Mass when it's your pocket...makes it look like one peed himself.

All kidding aside, this type of clean technology is long, long overdue. This is but one example of the very real possibility of alternative energy sources that have probably been around for longer than we know, but are only now being discussed, if implemented at all.

I bet battery manufacturer don't like the idea of selling you a battery once and then you just need to add water in it. Not good for business. Wink

IIRC Sony had one of those things on display a few weeks back. It was huge, but working. I don't really like the idea of buying a new cellphone battery every week instead of just recharging it. If it's not fully recyclable, it's going to pollute a lot. Awesome replacement for those AA batteries tho.

can you imagine if you just needed to add water to keep the fuel cell operable..that would be awesome! no more re-charging...car charger and all that extra crap....no more adapters and wires...that would be awesome....as long as you had a bottle of water on you...or could accurately pee in the hole you'd be golden! (no pun intended)

I can't wait to drink beer to recharge my batteries. hehe

It could be used to power tons of stuff at home, from TV to small kitchen appliances. Over here, the electricity is a major cash cow for the provincial government. I bet they won't like this new tech. Sweat

mass application of such hydrogen generating fuel cells could and would revolutionize the global economy and help lift the millions in poverty around the world. using water to gain power....just the thought alone is captivating.
