Personally, I don't mind being asked about my ethnicity because the questions I'm usually asked are quite amusing, as I had mentioned previously. So, I'm not bothered by it at all.

But my kids have Scottish/Dutch background, as my in-laws are Dutch-born.

imagine asking "So where are you from." as an icebreaker.
they answer, "america."
AWKWARD!

A better response would be "Earth." hehe

It's getting more difficult to find the right words to say these days, especially under the increasing racial and religious tension. I once went on a business dinner with some French and Greeks - I knew the French persons quite well but only met the Greeks for the first time. I thought starting a conversation on the subject of food should be innocent enough. I said to the Greeks "I don't know much about Greek cuisine, but I really loved Donar Kebab." One of Greeks looked at me in a weird sort of way and said "That's Turkish".

Faux pas in one. Bang Head

Errr folks I was talking about an ice breaker here on the MB. I used the word conversation loosely. Of course no one wants to be asked that as a first thing question when you are meeting strangers. All I was trying to say was that the question could be taken in the spirit in which it is asked. In this thread I think the spirit is a friendly one. Smile Hug
