Fewer arguements! |

know how you feel, doch. recent news article in hawaii listed an AVG house in hawaii costs $550,000. i hear about some of my relatives in the mainland having these huge mansions at about one-third the cost! |
They must not live in California, right? For the same money that gets me a condo or townhouse, I can buy 3-4x the house and lot in another state. But my and my wife's job is here, so we have to stay put. I could, of course, buy a property that's a 2.5 hour commute away....but then my stress level would rise and I would be in a bad mood always.

It's all about timing: if you bought a place, say 20+ years ago, it was a relative bargain, but now...
I've got a number of neighbors who bought their homes when they were built in 1970-71 and they paid all of $60K for 'em, but now, they're valued at around $750K+... Gack.

Yep. That's how it goes unless you pay your house off in cash.
Mortgages suck. On average 30 years? Shit _________________

Yup, usually 30 years.
On the plus side, you can write off the mortgage interest.

It looks more and more like I will have to get an interest-only or ARM to get a house. I'm leaning towards an ARM because it's less riskier than the interest-only. ..And to think I could easily buy a mansion in another state with what it costs here...

Yet it hasn't discouraged most people from living here or moving out of state...
It might help if you know someone in the loan/real estate business... They can pull strings and the like...

I may get a break from the interest rates and/or closing costs, but no one can affect the base price of the house...

nope, you're right. they're in florida.
well, while we're b*tching about how high the price of homes are, at least on the mainland, they're a bit more realistic on the salary payscale. here in hawaii, it's a known fact that we have one of the highest costs of living, yet rank near the lowest in pay.
in almost any profession (here in hawaii), our counterparts make more on the mainland.
thus, we call it the price of paradise.
but i still think it's better than japan. at least i can afford to live away from my parents. most people in japan don't really have a choice. they need to live with their parents for the rest of their lives - even after they're married.

Im glad I live in Florida and my parents live in NYC.
I tried sharing a summer home with my mother and husband a few years back.
The joke was that it was a contest for my soul between the two of them.
Honestly I dont know how people survive!! _________________

one of my friends is considering a job out there, and just wondering what the cost of living is like, what's good/bad about it, etc. |
I think along the West coast particularly California, the cost of living is sorta high... Don't have actual numbers, but housing pretty pricey in a decent area, I would say.
I think there's a couple of users who live down that away, but I can't recall....

True. However, invest it and you can use depreciation AND appreciation to your advantage as well. _________________
