This is a really fine film. It's not your typical chambara movie with swordfights breaking out every 10 minutes or so, but instead is a heartfelt critical view of the social dynamics of the rigid samurai hierarchy. There is, however, a great action sequence near the end. Toshiro Mifune is outstanding in infusing dignity, deliberateness, and righteousness in his character. A great actor who starred in many excellent films, of which this is one. Which leads to an obvious question: which Mifune film is the best one?
Can you guys recommend any good romance movies? I've heard of Crying Out Love in the Center of the World, Be With You, and Love Letter so far. Are there any others that you would recommend? Thanks!

Jozee, the Tiger and the Fish
It's a bit different from the usual romance movies, but it's definitly one of the best. _________________
Mifune would not have been offered a role in this series for the following reasons:
Not ugly enough
Not beautiful enough
Not young enough
Not vacuous enough
Plus, he would have been dead going on 4 or 5 years when that series aired, and even his great acting skills would not have enabled him to play a part with a pulse. However, he probably would have been able to match the range of emotions Kippei Shiina showed in that drama.
I recently saw the movie Messengers again, and I would recommend it if you're looking for light, amusing entertainment. It's a cute film which showcases Naoko Iijima's comedic talents. Tsuyoshi Kusanagi also stars in it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm definitely gonna check it out. Satoshi Tsumabuki's so cute! Does anyone else have other suggestions for romance movies? Thanks!

I saw a movie called "Kao" ("The Face") the other day... and the more I think about it, the more highly I recommend it.
It's from 2000, it stars Fujiyama Naomi, who is a stage star rather than a movie star (think a 30 year old Kathy Bates if you're American) and it's an odd, interesting story. A character study.
There are no hot babes in it. There are no flashing swords, or Matrix like F/X.
It's the story of a plain, heavy set woman in her 30s who's pretty much lived her whole life closed away in a second floor bedroom where she does the sewing work for her family's dry cleaning business.
She's shy, withdrawn, not overly bright... but due to a series of events she finds herself on the road, and on the run from the cops.
The bulk of the movie is about this woman's travels across the country, the people she meets, and her interactions with them. It's comic, tragic, and just sort of strange. And I know I'm being vague here, but I don't like spoilers myself, so I try to avoid them.
When I first watched the movie I thought it was just okay.
But the more I think about it... the more I enjoy thinking about it.
It's that whole thing about layers in literature. _________________
Actually, I hate news like this. Now I have to decide if I'm going to upgrade the DVDs I already have, or just live with them. Why the heck couldn't they get their act together and put out the definitive edition in the first place? Is it just greed on their part, wanting to get consumers to pay full price for the movie twice or what? Grrr! Grrr! Grrr!

I know how you feel: I hate double-dipping.
To be fair to Criterion, though, their re-mastering of classics, particularly the old ones is pretty much an ongoing process, since they're constantly trying to hunt down original film to create a definitive master.
If you're gonna gripe, look at the multiple releases of LOTR and other recent films... If that ain't milking the cow dry, I don't know what is.
