I watched "Warai no Daigaku" ("University of Laughs") last night.
The movie is from 2004, it stars Yaksuho Koji who was brilliant, and Goro from SMAP who-- dressed like a Vaudeville comic.
Taken from a two character stage play the story focuses on a small time comedy writer from a small time theater group... confronting the Japanese wartime government in the person of the official Censor, Yaksuho Koji.
This is rather a thoughtfull, theatrically paced, and ultimately poignant comedy, and I really enjoyed it. _________________

A very wonderful movie. It's about baseball, Koshien. I just love the idea of using twins as main characters. Nagasawa Masami did a pretty good job, and of course she's very cute. The plot was very solid and it the plot was indeed very solid. I just love the lead cast, Shota Saito and Keita Saito (real twins )
Now the best thing about it is, it's not the usual sport dorama story!!! No, it's not gonna be about how the lead cast gets beaten and tortured, or screwed up in the beginning, and then in the end he/she succeeds in reaching the dream.
The only thing i hate about it, is that it's predictable. very predictable. Let's just say, the theme is 'the world is unfair'.
Also, it's got only a little chit-chat. not to much talking. which is sometimes good, but can also become a boomerang. It made some really dramatic touchy parts become less tear-jerking due to the lack of sweet words said.
8/10
now i might think of watching H2, it might be nice comparing the two of them. _________________

On the more serious side:
I just watched a documentary from 1987 titled:
"The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On"
The man's name is/was Kanzo Okuzaki. A veteran of WWII, having served, and almost died... starved to death... in New Guinea, Okuzaki is a fanatic with a mission.
Having served more than 13 years in prison (after the war) for a series of crimes (including murder) Okuzaki has decided that it's his life's work to expose what really happened during the war. And to make clear why he so hates the Army, the Officers he served under, and most of all... The Emperor.
It should be mentioned that Okuzaki was jailed and did two years for trying to kiil the Emperor with a sling shot. He fired four lead pellets from a sling shot at the Emperor from the sidewalk outside the Palace.
Okuzaki does his own footwork going to interview the few remaining veterans of his battalion, demanding they tell the truth about what they did and apologize. Even going so far as to get into fist fights with two of the other old soldiers. Yep, these guys are all in their mid to late 60s.
The truth finally does come out. Your jaw will drop. Mine did, once I finally found out what he was so mad about.
And then it dropped again, when I found out how Okuzaki's story ended.
I wouldn't recommend this one to kids. But I really think it's something well worth seeing. _________________

So, can anyone recommend any really funny films?
When I say "funny", I mean "made you laugh so hard you cried".
Have you seen Linda Linda Linda? It's not classified as a comedy par se, but I remember there were so many moments in there where the entire cinema just dissolved into laughter. Plus it has fantastic music.
I recommend that film to everyone really, it's such a brilliantly composed film.
Also Shunji Iwai is a God. Love Letter, All About Lily Chou Chou and Picnic are my absolute favourites.

I watched Hula Girl last night... very much the same basic formula as "Swing Girls" and it was great fun.
Not as breezy as Swing Girls, Hula Girl is set in a poor mining town where everything is gray, cold, covered in coal dust.
Life is hard in this town, and the idea that a few school girls, some house wives, and some office workers would learn, and perform the Hula is... well, the stuff of movies.
Yasuko Matsuyuki does a great job as the drunken, washed up dancer who comes to town to teach the ladies.
And man... the final performance was astounding. _________________
