I think the critics in the States think it's a classic, like Tampopo...

Good to know.
When I saw the trailer in the theater, most of the people groaned.

As several people have already said, this is a great movie. It won all the major Japanese movie awards when it came out. The director, Masayuki Suo, made another movie a few years earlier entitled Sumo Do, Sumo Don't (Shiko Funjatta). This is also a very entertaining movie. It's about the efforts of a small group of "misfits" to try and keep a collegiate sumo club going despite the overwhelming odds. Naoto Takenaka, who had a memorable role in Shall We Dance? (he played the guy with the dual personality) has an equally memorable role in this movie. In fact, there are several actors who appear in both movies. It's a funny, heartwarming movie, just like Shall We Dance?

I will vote for "Good Luck" as this is really a great drama which recently shown on TV in Hong Kong.
What I am deeply impressed is Mr. Tsutsumi Shinichi's great performance. Also, the theme for the story is also fresh to Hong Kong fans.

Uh, sorry, but this thread is about Japanese movies, not TV dramas... Gomen.

Koji Yakusho was the star of "Shall we dansu?"
He was also the "Man in the White Suit" in Tampopo.
And in '97 (?) he followed up Dansu with the staring role in "The Eel" (Unagi)... which I thought was freakin' brilliant.
And just because we were talking about the movie on another thread... He's in "Memoirs of a Geisha" which is slated to come out next year.
Man, has this guy had a career! |
Additional note: He also played Miyamoto Musashi in a jdorama in '79-'80 (?)....

Actually the title is: "2046"
Movie database trivia about the movie:
Originally conceived as a story of a hit man in Bangkok. The hit man was to be played by Japanese superstar Takuya Kimura.
Production was shut down during the SARS epidemic in March 2003.
The print for Cannes arrived three hours before the delayed premier, escorted by police. It is the first film in Cannes' history to arrive so late that re-schedulings were necessary.
The title of the film refers to the last year before the 50-year period the Chinese Government promised to let Hong Kong remain as it is. Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997.
In one of the original versions, Tony Leung was to play a futuristic postman.
The director declined the invitation to screen the film in the New York Film Festival.
Was supposed to be the closing film of the Edinburgh Film Festival. |
Wow...sounds like a good film. Thanks for the info. I like Tony Leung. Also it's a Wong Kar Wai film.
Here's the official site BTW...:
http://www.wkw2046.com/
Also...(correction from first post)...starring Maggie Cheung (not Sammi Cheung).

I don't see Sammi Cheung in the credits. Are you confusing Sammi Cheng with Maggie Cheung?

I think she is.
