Maybe because of the sterotype that most sumos are huge to say the least makes it very hard for modern weight conscious people to join.
It is really sad that some restrictions on the art is placed but the singapore gov is alwas scared somebody takes what they learn and use it in real life.

In Japan, the 2 most practiced martial arts would be either karate or akido totaling about 80%, with every other arts totaling 20%. Those who take up arts usually only practice just one form, because the students would not want to be disloyal from the sensei in that aspect. If you do take up more than multiple form without mastering one you would be considered very arrogant. You could learn more than one artform, however, if you do have the ability to become exceptional at those forms, but is ususally frowned upon.

The two most practised arts in japan are karate and aikido? I think you must have mixed up aikido and kendo.

Actually you are correct, I did make a mistake. I actually meant in Okinawa, not Japan. Kendo is way popular (in high school) than karate. But the thing I mention with practicing one form still is valid. They (Okinawans and/or JPNese) do frown upon that.

Weapons originated from Okinawa are very interesting......Sometimes even more interesting than the normal katana

Hi, I'm a new member, actually I'm not new, but this is my first post.

I have studies martial arts: Karate (JIKC, Kyokushi kai), Tae Kwan Do (Under Ji Sung Song, and Dae Song Lee), and Judo (In High School, a looooong time ago). Don't train any more, but would like to get back into it. When I do I want to train in Kendo, or maybe Kung Fu.

I was a big Shinichi Chiba, JAC fan too!

You can learn Ninjitsu. There are still ryu in Japan that teach it, but mostly the hand to hand combat, mind training, and such, not the secret stuff, but then I could be wrong. Also there are a lot of books published about this topic (Ninjitsu).

U should read some of the books that is out there first before chosing your martial arts. Some tend to be soft some are hard, should chose one that suits your character.
Oh ya i read that somewhere that those ninja disappearing techniques are r really cheesy. They just sneak behind the opponent and out of his sight.

Nunchakus, Tonfa, Bo, Sickle and chain are all okinawan weapons. I never did like nunchakus though.

but as I know Qigong is also interesting...Inner strength man...[ Reading Tiger wong comics ] and see that the inner strength can protect your body even from sharp object....n that's not magic I ever saw Shaolin monk put his neck on the spear and survive

Nanchuks are way cool but hard to use for if without proper guidiance you would proberly injure youself very badly.
Muay thai is very offensive and really taxing for the practioner if you are not prepared to go the whole way. The training i heard is quite physically demanding. And i dont see people doing it for too long, their body cant take it when they are old.

arashinokoto, Thanks for the compliments. I trained a long time ago. I'm so out of touch now, except for Kendo since my son trained in it for 3 years. He was good, but you know kids.

Did do a lot of tournaments, as I got older I learned that it wasn't your skill that helped you to win, but who you knew, so a lot of really good martial artist lost a lot of the time. I hope it's not like that now.

Judo is very popular in Japan and Hawaii. Tried it for a year in High School but couldn't stay with it because I got dizzy when we'd have to practice our rolling technics,
