That's convoluted thinking. Every person who has this kind of habit/addiction uses that "better to live" line as their excuse...

to take someone you know NOTHING about and assume they are making excuses for the manner which they live their own life is pure ignorance. i am actually majoring in philosophy (working on a phd) so i am pretty much the last person who would convince myself of fallacies to help me sleep at night with some sort of addiction. i actually dont ever get cravings to smoke, maybe its because ive done much more addictive substances in the past. i smoke when i am bored or socializing. i have never when out with the intention to smoke a cigarrete. its always during passing period at school or break during work. theres tricks to help yourself not get addicted. the main reason i started and do smoke is because it just feels great with alcohol.
i guess my point is assumptions make an ASS of U and ME

Hey, ya'll's smokers. Please to explain the . . . craving for smoking to us non-smokers. You have a point-of-reference for it, for us? Is it akin to enjoying a cold cup or glass of water after walking through the desert for an hour? What? Explain. Seriously, I'm . . . still trying to understand. Are you craving the smoke? Or is it something else in it (as Michael Mann's The Insider tells us)?

im not a heavy smoker myself but, a lot of it is a learned behavior. in many cases, such as when one is stressed, they will learn to associate stress relief with lighting up a cigarette. i guess, the addictive nature of nicotine also makes it similar to the "cold glass of water after walking through the desert." im pretty sure everyone has there own personal reasons for why they started smoking. regardless of what those personal reasons are, it all leads to addiction.

its sad how people keep saying quit for money, such a capitalistic way of thinking. not everyone runs on monetary motives.

Yeah. But, I didn't say it was the ONLY reason (look back at what I said). The most obvious reason is health. And, no matter how you cut it, it's true . . . you save money.

one could save much more money by: eating simplistic foods, getting rid of telephone line, cable/sattelite tv, internet connection, have 1 set of clothing, walk instead of driving whenever possible, etc.
we spend money on what we enjoy, theres no reason to not do this.

O.K., how' bout saving MORE money, then? Is this supposed to be a philosophy thing Shake Head Rolling eyes ? Uh, I'm just saying folks should quit. Doesn't mean that they are. Just trying to encourage them to quit. Saving money, yeah, is a good reason, and there are a whole buncha' good reasons to quit smoking. O.K., so, let's NOT include in the "quit smoking" argument, "you can save money"; let's see how many smokers are motivated (which I'm not, at the office today, RIMSHOT!!!! Mr Green), or say "forget about it." How's THAT for Schopenhauerean or Aristotelian or Heideggerian or Kantian logic (I've read these guys, by the way, so, don't think I'm just name-dropping), yuk yuks? Cripes, I'm full of yuk-yuks today.

Oh man. Spare the philosophical diatribe, willya? If you're under the delusion that smoking let's you live your life or sets you free in some way, so be it....
