Yeah yeah, I know that. Before I got my XP comp, I had 3 Win98 comps happily coexisting on a network. I have 3 comps, a 8-way switch, and an ADSL modem on the network. I am using fixed IP's, due to having an old(ish) modem: it doesn't have a web-based config, you have to connect to it thru the serial port. All comps connect to the net fine, they just don't connect XP-to-98.

Yep, especially for win98. You can skip it, if you type the PC's name directly in the explorer bar: \\bmwracer or \\aprildancer If it's on another domain or workgroup, it'll prompt for a login / password.
IIRC, in Win98, you need to add the IPX/SPX and Netbui protocols too. _________________

OK< now i'm stumped: I tried again on the weekend, and the 98 comp connected to the XP one immediately via Network Neighbourhood I have NO idea what was wrong before, but it works now

I'd like to buy a new 500gb HD, they are so cheap now. I remember talking to my colleague in december and said: if the price drops below $150 I'll get one (the price was at 175 at that moment)

It would be my first ever SATA drive as well, never saw the benefit over PATA. but they are cheaper than PATA drives now. And they seem to be just as reliable too. My systems at home have 2-4 internal SATA ports, so I don't have to worry about incompatibilities anymore.
lately I keep running out of space (250+160gb), even when I burn dvds like a factory XD I hate you incomplete Jdrama/anime series! they just keep on sitting there..
and I blame the newsgroups, and/or the forums I joined. they keep on pumping out DVD-9's and to download, extract to (iso), extract to videofiles, convert to DVD-5 requires lots of space: 9gb, 8gb, 8gb, 5 gb = 30gb a movie needed. 15-20gb if I delete the former instantly, but that really hampers my total speed in downloading/converting. oh well, the worries of a superleecher

Sata drives might work for you. I haven't seen much of a difference between my old IDE drives and Sata for normal use. It seems faster to transfer from sata to sata vs ide to ide, but it could be a placebo effect.
I like the tiny cables, much cleaner in the case, but a bitch to plug. It unplugs and breaks easily too. _________________

It's not a placebo. SATA is faster than PATA (IDE), hands down. In the spec (perfect) scenario world. I would suggest going to SATA drives since in the long run, the prices should come down. It is engineeringly (is that a word?) difficult to achieve high transfer rates on PATA due to its design.
Spent the helping my uncle with video editing software and cd-to-mp3 software... Add to that the OS nightmare called Vista and you've got a rather grueling evening...
I could've set Vista to run in the classic Windows mode, but it was my uncle's PC, so I left it alone.
The other frustration was that my uncle had to read every pop-up message completely before clicking "yes" or "no"... Even though he's seen the message over and over again...

Haha, love classic mode. The first ever thing I did when I saw Vista displayed at a store was changing back to classic mode.
I still really hate XP's bloated and confusing start bar menu, and Vista's is no better. oh well. And that Aeroglass is just nice for one time, other than that it's just eating away your memory.

All the more reason to revert back to the Classic Style.
A few days ago the KABC computer show had this little gem:
"As an aside, you can speed up downloads noticeably, with any system, by getting a better DNS server. That is, there is a
delay in downloading, until the DNS server translates the URL to an IP address. This takes a discernible amount of time.
(It can be readily observed if you use the Opera browser.) So, you can easily reduce the time before the actual web site
is accessed.
I went to the site(opendns.com) and followed the instructions. Now my web pages load like lightning... Even jdoram which has beenn having a delay in loading for the last week.
I'm certainly pleased with this. But I would like to know why this is working so good. Can anyone explain this?

Wanna dip my toe in this thread (so to speak) to ask -
does anyone know how I can stop my laptop from switching off?
All I can tell you is my new laptop is Toshiba. It has Windows Vista.
If I'm doing stuff on it, it's fine.
But if nothing is clicked on - or the cursor moved - it switches off after 10 minutes (internet connection is shut off).
This is fine normally, but I want to be able to leave the laptop while I'm downloading.
I downloaded the first epsiode of Kuitan 2, and it switched off part way, before I realized.
Then, in order to keep it going (after I'd had to restart the computer), I had to be doing stuff.
