I deserved that. What can I say, I'm a computer dinosaur.
Any ideas what good programs for hardsubbing/multipass divx that will take advantage of multi-core processors?
That you're running on a P3 is impressive honestly. My first computer was a 633MHz Celeron with 256MB of RAM. I used that for a good six years before finally upgrading a couple of years ago. I just had to learn how to make sure it ran as smoothly as possible. It made me understand that efficiency is just as important as having a fast CPU or more RAM. You can have those things, but you can still bring a computer down to a crawl with spyware, bloatware, fragmented drives, etc. I'm sure you've learned how to make the most of your system, and having that experience can only help. The next system you get will be plenty fast, but you also have the experience to get the most out of it.
As for programs, that's something 'racer can help you out with a lot more than I can, as I hardly ever do any video encoding.

Yes.
Having all that junk on your machine can bring any system to its knees, no matter how big and fast it is.

Sucks to hear that Virtualdub won't take advantage of the dual cores, but I found out that divx might be able to. Apparently, if you install the latest version on a multi-core computer, it'll detect it and use a version optimized for it.....or so some folks say.

That might speed up VirtualDub, since it's basically just a GUI for various filters and encoding schemes like DivX.
I always use xViD for whatever reason instead of DivX.

I found a little program to help with syncing subs to video files: http://www.ireksoftware.com/ta/ Very handy when you get raws where someone decides to chop out the 12 or so seconds of advertising in the middle of an episode, like someone did with the Haken no hinkaku raws I downloaded

Ahh, TimeAdjuster...
I used that to adjust the timing on the subs Geez and I were working on for Jiko Keisatsu...
Free and works great. You might just need lame.dll, but you can Google that.
LOL, that's exactly what I ended up finding, thanks!! Been playing with it since. You replied so fast, I didn't even realize you had answered when I deleted my post. _________________
