Alrighty, lets just start with the basics.
For both XP and Vista, go to the Control Panel, then open up System. From there you should be able to see the Workgroup name for each computer. Just make sure that the name is the same. I just use workgroup, but any name is fine as long as its the same on both computers.
Sorry for the late response. I changed them to the same name. What should I do next? _________________

With the laptop, click on the start menu and go to Network. It should show you what computers are in the workgroup. Chances are at this point, you will probably see just the laptop. I'm guessing it should see the old PC as well, but I'm just not certain.

Cool, I do see that my desktop's computer name is on my laptop, but I think I have to input a username/password before I can access it. Unfortunately, I can't/don't remember what it is. _________________

It's good that your laptop can see the desktop. As far as user/password goes, usually it should be the same one you use to long into the desktop. Also, see if the desktop can see the laptop as well.

Oh jeez.
Don't you just want to hit me upside the head for being so aggravating with all of this? I know I do. Still, it's been 6+ years since I had the desktop, so I don't remember what the username/pw is and I cannot think of where I put that info either. _________________

That's strange. Do you have to log in when you use the old PC? Perhaps the prompt for the username/password is just there as default. I guess you could try to just put in the name of your desktop, leave the password part blank and click ok.

There's a login name when I go on the old PC, but no password. I tried just putting only the login name when trying to access it with my laptop, but it asks for a password too.

Isn't it frustrating that I ain't paying you guys for all the help I'm getting and for irritating you with all of my stupidity?
On another note, I found my Nero disc and installed it on my new laptop, so it's pretty quick (10 minutes) to burn a data disc. If possible, I'd still want to connect my computers, but it's not as necessary as before. _________________

For the time being, have you checked if you can see the laptop on your PC? If you can, and don't need a username and password to access it, perhaps that just might work for the time being. As long as the PC can access the laptop to get the data as it burns to disc.

Well, we're all newbies at one point or another
No matter how long I've been using computers, I'll always be considered a "newbie" when it comes to the technical aspect. Thanks for the help, btw! _________________

No prob. I have very little knowledge about networking computers, so this is a bit of learning process for myself as well since I've yet to network a Vista PC to a XP PC. If anything I'll see if I can use my roommate's laptop since it uses XP.
Also, if anyone else is following this thread and can help out, it'd be much appreciated

I was thinking about that recent news report where they found that PC keyboards were more bacteria-laden than toilets...
I usually use an air canister to blow out any small chunks of food, and every few weeks I pop out all the keys to wash them and use some disinfectant wipes to clean out the bottom part of the keyboard. Mouse gets the disinfectant wipe treatment as well.
Edit: this refers to my keyboard. As for my roommate's, well, I'll be sure to wash my hands thoroughly after use.
