I saw the first few eps of Coffee House and was pleasantly surprised by Ham Eun Jung's performance. However, I dropped it because the show seemed so pointless. Also I pretty much disliked Kang Ji Hwan's character.

Really?! To each his/her own, but I think COffee House hilarious! I don't see how it's any more or less pointless than most other dramas, though. I like the plot and I think it has a strong sense of direction.

About Kang Ji Hwan, I like his character. He's psychotic and whimsical but shows the occassional burst of humanity. He may not be a good person, but he's a good drama character with plenty of complexity to dig out. Sometimes I think of the drama as being about a mystery writer with his own mystery. It's fun :)

I really like the character development and shifting relations in Coffee House. It's very well written I think.

Well, if you're ever bored and decide you might want to give it a second chance, you should check out the recaps/reviews at www.dramabeans.com! She writes very witty, critical, and perspicacious reviews :victory: It's almost as much fun reading her reviews as it is watching the drama.

Well, put that way any fictional show can be called pointless.
What I was getting at is that along with Coffee House, I started A Man Called God and Bad Guy. In these latter shows you have a main character with sense of revenge and a goal in mind. But in Coffee House, what is he going for? A successful author, he appears to already be one. The flashbacks which were suppose to peak my interest, did nothing for me because I saw the character as so flat. Honestly I was surprised because I thought that I was dislike Par Si Yeon and/or Ham Eun Jung and Kang Ji Hwan would be the one to carry the show. It turned out to be the complete opposite for me. I do hope Ham Eun Jung get to do another rom-com because I really liked the little I saw from her.

Okay I see what you mean now, but I guess it still came off different for me. He's definitely an offbeat character, but from the onset, it seemed like there was a method to his madness--not just that the writers had made him out to be a stocky character. I felt like there was something brewing beneath the surface, and I feel like that definitely comes out through more clearly a few episodes in. The something percolating through the surface was enough to interest me.

One of the things that I like about this drama is that it breaks from usual tropes. Typically we meet characters and watch as their relationships/characterization/motives develop. In CH, we instead meet already well-established characters, both in characterization and in their relationships to one another, and find out how they came to be that way. Not to say that the characters are static though, because just because a relationship is well-established does not mean its dynamics don't change. (they're changing) I definitely feel like this drama plays with the facade of success and fame, and shows how this facade, built on unstable grounds, can be so easily unraveled. I sensed that the KJH and PSY's character were treading lightly around some suppressed issue, and that made me curious about them.

It's interesting to me, that this drama has more of a non-linear narrative.

I do agree though, that if a viewer hasn't built up a rapport with the characters in the drama, then the flashbacks probably won't cut it as far as piquing interest. Kinda like, oh he had a sad past--so what, many people do.

I'm surprised with PSY and HEYJs performances so far too. More PSY than HEJ, for the simple fact that I didn't know who Ham Eun Jung was previously so she had no impression on me. But PSY, she was the stocky villain in My Girl. She was forgettable...but in CH, her character has a lot of energy and charm. I like her a lot! I heard HEJ next project is a horror movie :)

I just finished Mr. Goodbye

http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Mr_Goodbye

Lee Bo Young is as pretty as a TV/Movie star gets.

Ahn Jae Wook was terrific as the title character in O! Pil-seung Bong Soon-yeong but he had to be a lot more subdued in Mr. Goodbye.

And Oh Yoon Ah had me thinking terribly dirty things throughout.

But as pretty as Lee Bo Young was, and as sexy as Oh Yoon Ah was... they really didn't have enough material for 16 episodes... the idea was depressing... and they seemed to lose track of a number of their subplots. And that's a shame because they could have used them.

This is becoming one of my pet peeves with Korean shows. They open doors... and then refuse to go inside. I don't know. Maybe they are too sensitive to viewer feedback. In many cases it looked to me like they were going to start a storyline and then suddenly they just tossed the idea out the window.

Yeah, PSY hasn't really convinced me, but she has played very much secondary characters. Maybe Coffee House will be a turning point for her. :victory: As for HEJ, she has acted in a couple of movies I saw, but I never really noticed her, until now.

I have this drama an 8/10, for some of the reasons you've listed above. And I agree with the idea that producers seem sensitive to their audience, and therefore limit their own creativity. There was a huge gap between the first few episodes and the last with no connection whatsoever.

Yea, I get what you mean. Korean romances tend to get redundant and repetitive.

I thought capri pants were women attire. Before K-dramas I'd never seen a guy wearing them.

When men wear them, they aren't called capris. They're called "cropped pants."
Or so I've heard. :hehe:
