Here's the clip:
http://www.macgeek.org/jdrama/test/utsf_ep01_missing01.mpg
It's about 1 min, 33 sec., 29MB, MPEG-2. The way I'm laying out the subtitles is on a min:sec:ms schedule, example:
11:15:32 - Rinse out your mouth when you come home.
11:15:38 - Wash your hands after ever meal.
11:15:45 - In any casec I donft know how to say it well, butc
11:15:52 - I understand.
Of course, you don't have to include the milliseconds (WMP doesn't support ms measurements). Just min:sec is enough for me.
Thanks!!!!

In this project, there's one thing I've learned to appreciate... And that's people like jem and others who add English subtitles on a regular basis. If you watch any of these fan subs, please keep in mind the blood and sweat that go into this process.
Just to give you an idea... This subbing project being my very first, it took me 2.5 hours to sub 5 minutes of video!!!! The process is very slow because you need to sit there with headphones on, and play each dialog over-and-over-and-over again to nail down the timing of the text when they're displayed.
It also helps to use software with a user-friendly interface. I have over $500 worth of software being used in this project, and ALL of them fail totally in regards to human interfacing (a field I minored in during my undergraduate studies). Pinnacle Studio 8, though it has great text features, fails miserably when measuring the software in regards to productivity. For example, when you highlight a piece of text, you would expect to have the text overwritten when you type text to replace it. Nope! Also, when you click the splicing button to create two segments, you would never think that you'd have to click the same button TWICE!!!! And, you can't really effectively right-click on ANYTHING!!!!
However, once you work around these really stupid inefficiencies, Pinnacle does actually produce great video... So here's grading time for me!!!!!
My third test can be downloaded at:
http://www.macgeek.org/jdrama/test/utsr-ep01-test03-svcd-groink.mpg
The file is 153MB, MPEG-2/SVCD format, and 7 min, 43 secs. What I'm looking for input on are these things:
- Is the text easy to read?
- Excluding the flickering, other video and audio quality issues?
- If burned to a SVCD, how does it look on your TV set?
Again, please download the file to your hard disk before playing. My web site doesn't stream video that well.
Please reply to this thread with comments! Thanks!

hey groink, i know what you mean.
i'm subtitling kamisama mou sukoshi at the moment also, but it took me from 945 pm until 1240am to just complete 170 lines of dialogue for episode 1. (its approximately 16 to 17 minutes worth of video!!!), just imagine im not even half done yet.
but actually JEM doesn't put english subtitles in. in singapore the TV station there has english subtitles already! thats why theres so many episodes that JEM has released, he just rips the episodes from tv and encodes them to divx format for downloads. but its still a lot of work, since he encodes so many episodes and posts them right away.
too bad its not like that over here in the US, (not as many jdramas shown here).
also i think its much harder if you are trying to do this all by yourself (like myself). many fansubs are done with groups of people, so the time is split up. _________________

Yuuuuuuup! If UTSR didn't include Noriko-chan, I wouldn't be putting myself through all of this! BTW, I've now completed about 25 mins of episode 1, and the time to do it is shrinking now that I have the process down pat.
This coming week is going to be bad for me because I'm receiving floods of requests for Hotman and Hello Black Jack (both series are airing their final eps this week). So a lot of time will be spent preparing these two series for seeding and trading. I'll still try to spend at least one hour per day on UTSR. Maybe with this type of schedule I'll have ep1 done by next week.

Hey, everyone!!!!! I've completed as much of episode 1 as my non-Japanese speaking self can. Now I'm hoping that you people could please help me translate some scenes for me.
You can download the file at:
http://www.macgeek.org/jdrama/test/utsr-ep01-vcd-need-translate.mpg
The file is about 54MB, MPEG-1 format, 5 mins 26 sec in length. Please download to your hard disk before playing.
Here's a description of each scene (the time in the parenthesis is the starting point for the scene):
Scene 1 (00:00)
Masaya is in OR observing a medical procedure. One of the medical students faint after looking at an opened chest.
Scene 2 (00:29)
Masaya eats a steak meal with his fellow medical students. There is some medical terms mentioned in this scene.
Scene 3 (01:30)
Tatsuya walks with his fiancee, Sasaku. He's nervous about meeting her parents.
Scene 4 (02:01)
Tatsuya wakes up after being punched by Koyuki's boss. Both walk outside. Tatsuya does most of the talking.
Scene 5 (02:50)
Koume is studying in her dorm while her roommate plays the radio loud. I think Koume asks the roommate to turn the volume down, but instead she cranks the volume even louder.
Scene 6 (03:15)
Koume is in the bathroom, and a guy tries to pry his way in. I think he's complaining about her taking too long.
Scene 7 (03:29)
Tatsuya is enjoying a hot chocolate with Koume. He does all the talking.
Scene 8 (04:02)
Koyuki and Tatsuya walks into a pizza bar looking for Kazuya. Koyuki asks someone where he is.
Scene 9 (05:02)
Tatsuya meets up with family friend of the Kashiwagi family.
Once I get these scenes translated, I can FINALLY rip the final version. Thanks, everyone!

Some translations:
Groink, i did not d/l ur clip. I played my LD (same source as yours) to do the translation based on your description of the scene. I started from the beginning of every scene. My Japanese is pretty rusty so i'm not too sure if this is up to your expectations....
Quote: | Scene 1 (00:00)
Masaya is in OR observing a medical procedure. One of the medical students faint after looking at an opened chest. |
Senior Surgeon : We'll be starting. Please do your best.
Junior Residents : Thanks for your guidence.
Senior Surgeon : Masaya, come take a look.
Masaya : Yes
Senior Surgeon : First....
Quote: | Scene 4 (02:01)
Tatsuya wakes up after being punched by Koyuki's boss. Both walk outside. Tatsuya does most of the talking. |
Walking out of the house.
Tatsuya (T) : Your Elder Brother.... I (this is direct translation of his words but i think you can just use I.... )
(T) continued : I don't like people who enages in extra martial affairs. In a marriage yet continuing to deceive innocent girls.
Koyuki (K) : Naive, you mean...
(T) : Allright, if you say it's naive. All in all, they've been used and deceived
(T) continued : For All you know... they'll be sold to HK
(K) :Stop exaggerating!
(T) : Are you saying that i'm going overboard?
(T) continued: All right, i should be going too. Bye!
(K) : Sorry, Big Brother.... You've come all the way and i've made you angry.
Quote: | Scene 6 (03:15)
Koume is in the bathroom, and a guy tries to pry his way in. I think he's complaining about her taking too long. |
Koume (K) trying to stop the guy (G)from opening the door
(K) : What are you doing?
(G) : I want to take a bath.
(K() I'll be done soon, please wait outside.
(G) : I think you forgot that who gets to bath first in this house. (the exact translations sounds funny so i repharsed it to get the emaning across)
(K) : Sorry, i thought that all of you are done. Anyway, please just get out.
(G) : What the hell! (shouting after he's pushed out)
I have the rough translation of Scene 2. But i'm lost with the medical terms.... will try to give them to you when my fiancee comes over.... he's the doctor
I can't find Scene 9 in my LD as yet.... will try to round through the disc again maybe tomorrow.
Cheers!

Wow, it's been awhile since I've posted my last progress report...
Episode 1 was completed about one week ago, and I've completed the first 10 minutes of episode 2. Episode 2 is much faster to sub... I'm getting really good at this subbing/editing stuff!!!! Still though, there's a lot of typing involved!!!
First, episode 1... I'm experimenting with several methods of ripping both a DVD version for myself, and a SVCD version for the rest of the free world. So far, Pinnacle Studio 8 is working out great for DVD, but sucks wind when ripping to DV... I was planning on ripping the SVCD version off the DV dump... It would be better quality than ripping the DVD down to SVCD. What's happening is the DV dump takes about a zillion years on a Pentium 4. Could be even longer, I've never had the dump complete because I keep stopping it to do other things like e-mail and working on my web site. So please bear with me!!!!
Episode 2... I did something special to episode 2. I've placed karaoke lyrics into the opening theme play. It adds a really nice touch to it. I got the idea for this from the Great Teacher Onizuka series. I'm only going to place the lyrics in episode 2. I'll leave them out for the remaining episodes.
That's about it for now! The holidays are getting closer and closer, so my work may start to run in a slower pace, so again please be patient! Also, my mom's have shoulder problems, so I'm helping her with physical therapy, and performing more chores around the house.
Thanks!
