She's everyone's darling

SHE'S the picture of perfection - and perhaps, the paparazzi's worst nightmare.
That's because Japanese darling Yukie Nakama seems to be in everyone's good books, from fans to advertisers and co-workers.
The face of Shiseido cosmetics and AU phones clocked the most screen time for TV commercials last year, totalling 45 hours 28 minutes and 30 seconds, said an annual report by Video Research.
She's also a favourite with her colleagues.
Fellow actress Yoko Nogiwa once said of her: 'She's always smiling and she has a soft, gentle air about her.'
Director Yukihiko Tsutsumi added: 'She's such an outstanding beauty and yet, she gives off an aura... that soothes you.'
And no popularity poll is complete without Yukie's name.
The Okinawa native, best known as the gangster teacher Yangumi in the hit drama, Gokusen, has been voted favourite female artiste, best product spokesmodel and even the artist with the most beautiful hair.
Producers adore her too, casting her in big projects, such as ninja flick Shinobi last year and the upcoming movie special of the popular imperial court series, Oku.
Despite her demure image, Yukie is really a sporty girl who loves scuba diving, boating and horseback riding.
She told Nonno magazine that making a trip out to sea is a must each time she returns to her island home on Okinawa in southern Japan.
But, her biggest thrill comes from watching horror flicks.
'I love horror shows,' confessed the 26-year-old.
'It's frightening, but when I see a scary scene, I'd feel like flying out of my seat in fright.'
Interestingly, it was the horror genre that launched her movie career.
She won her first leading role in 2000 in Ringu 0, the prequel to the horror hit, Ringu (The Ring). She plays the young Sadako before she became the iconic ghost that climbs out of wells and TV sets.
But it was only after demonstrating her comic talent on TV - first as a quirky magician in the suspense series Trick, and then the clumsy gangster teacher in Gokusen - that Yukie really shone.
Fame brought the paparazzi who shadowed her every move.
But Yukie keeps such a low profile that none has managed to snap incriminating pictures of her and rumoured beaus Katsunori Takahashi and Takaya Kamikawa.
Yukie may not have time for romance anyway, given her jam-packed filming schedule. She has just filmed the historical drama, Komyo Ga Tsuji, and is set to start on Oku.
Yukie said she prefers a laidback life and rarely engages in any showbiz politicking or rivalry.
'No matter how busy I am, I hope I can be happy and feel relaxed as I enjoy my work.'
On coping with pressure, she said: 'I'd hypnotise myself to sleep. It's no use brooding over things, or always fighting to be number one.
'Just say whatever is on your mind instead of suppressing it. That's very important.'
That, perhaps, is the secret of her success.
Shinobi, which stars Yukie Nakama and Joe Odagiri as lovers from two rival ninja clans, is available here on DVD.
