The only thing I know about this is that one of the girls is the sister of Lisa Ling (reporter & ex-host of The View) and this sounds like a movie. Makes me think that no American should go to N. Korea if something like this is going to happen. |
We are targets in various countries.
But on the plus side we are cherished in others.

They should've known better... It puts the U.S. government in an awkward position, especially since they were trying to lean on North Korea for firing missiles and testing nukes.

On another subject: I found another drama (well, a special) that I would love to see subs for: Kujira to medaka, which stars 2 of my favorites - Tanaka Kunie (Kita no Kuni Kara) and Shida Mirai (Seigi no Mikata). Opposite ends of the age scale |
I watched this one, the acting performances were really good. I don't remember what happened in the second half of the story though.

I feel really bad for them and their friends and family, but what in the heck were they doing there?
Didn't they realize that the North Koreans were gonna make them pawns in a battle of wills with the U.S.? |
But before judging them: i's actually not even sure if they entered North Korea - they were in China to report on North Korean refugees in China who are sent back to NK by Chinese authorities. NK is not shy when it comes to kidnapping.

The news report I saw also said they were on the Chinese side of the border. The reporter said it's likely they will be used as bargaining chips for economic negotiations.

Tragic.
Missed Air France Flight, Only to Die in Car Crash
After narrow escape, fate catches up with Italian traveler
By XANA O'NEILL
Updated 2:35 PM CDT, Thu, Jun 11, 2009
A woman who dodged death when she and her husband narrowly missed Air France Flight 447 before it plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 228 aboard, was killed in a car accident just over a week later.
Johanna Ganthaler a retiree from the Bolzano-Bozen province, was on vacation in Brazil with her husband Kurt when the pair miraculously missed the doomed flight to Paris. But their luck ran out on an Austrian road earlier this week when their car swerved into the path of an oncoming truck outside the town of Kufstein, the Times (U.K.) reported.
Kurt Ganthaler was badly hurt in the accident.
Flight 447 disappeared from radar shortly after leaving Rio de Janeiro and is believed to have broken apart shortly after it left the airport in Brazil on May 31 with 228 people on board.
Some three dozen bodies have been fished out of the ocean where the Airbus jet plunged into the water. A nuclear-powered French submarine has begun scouring the seafloor for any sign of the black box, which could hold the key to determining what felled the plane.
The Ganthalers flew out of the country on a flight the day after the jet went missing.

They were journalists. They probably thought reality doesn't apply to them because they were the "press". North Korea has only been doing this type of thing for decades. The NORK's likely didn't even know they were Americans when they decided to grab them.

Hard to say. There's talk that they may have took a hop over to snap a few shots when they though they weren't being watched......... ...........and NK QRF rolled them up. May be true or not, but either way common sense was a scarce commodity that day.

I suppose... But it's gotta be the cruelest twist of fate imaginable.

Well if the Hungarian person knows English.... Rather a roundabout way to get subs, though maybe Babelfish works better with hungarian than Japanese. |
Good news: The Hungarian subber also speaks (or writes) almost-perfect English. She translated episode 1 for me and did an awesome job. I just hope she's prepared to keep it up. Natsukawa Yui fans, rejoice!

The two American reporters worked for Al Gore's Cable News network based in San Francisco.
It used to be known as the News World Int. A 24 hour cable news net work that broadcast shows from Canada.
The story is that the reporters were on the wrong side of the river that forms the border between N. Korea and China.
Same thing almost happened to some reporters from National Geographic two years ago... but as the North Korean soldiers rushed the N.G. reporters they saw that the N.G. reporters were being escorted by Chinese troops. So they back right off that time.
