The reporter on NHK says they're still getting significant aftershocks, two hours after the initial quake. Sweat

I can't imagine the level of destruction if the quake was inland.

I suppose Japan is lucky in that respect... Though no one is feeling that way at the moment. Sweat

Hope the injuries and casualties are minimal... Fingers crossed Fingers crossed Fingers crossed

I remember the Kobe quake back in '95. The epicenter was only 20km away. Could you imagine today's magnitude and duration at 20km instead of 230km? Far more catastrophic. Still there's significant damage and sadly the number of deaths are coming in.

Yeah, we've had our share in SoCal: Sylmar, 1971... Northridge, 1993... Sweat

And the guys up in NorCal had the one in 1989. Sweat

I find it amusing that the news anchorman gets to wear a hard hat yet the news room staff in the background aren't provided any. Ron Burgundy.

I'm guessing cori and any other Hawaiian JDorama members are okay. There's another forum I belong to and one of the guys from Hawaii posted this:

There were lots of water surges in the Hawaii harbors tossing the smaller boats but nothing too nasty. It was freaky looking at the receeding water with the surf going backwards from my house way above and back from the Honolulu coastline. The first waves were nothing. It was almost three hours after the first tsunami that we got anything. Glad that the all clear was held off.
No problems except that there has been more media coverage on CNN and HNN than here now. But staying up all night and hearing the sirens blast every hour was unnerving. Local people are pretty compliant knowing what can happen whether the wave is four feet or ten feet. The video of the 33 foot wave in Japan is a real wakeup call. Anything coming at you at hundreds of mph, whether if be water, wind, a building or a car, is gonna do some major hurt so when they tell you to scram, you had better not take any chances and stick around. A bunch of anal tourists wanted to sit by the beach to watch the "big surf" come in. They finally got the idea to move inland or to higher floors in the hotels.
