My DVD burner is f$%&ed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so mad about it and frustrated, that I can't even get into the issues behind it, especially since I cannot find and fix the root of the problem. This thing is only 4 months old, so if it's dying, I'll be making some enemies.
I'm clueless about this though.......aahhh fork it I'm going to sleep now I've been up all night with this and nothing is fixed, and it may even be worse! So I must rest what few little semi-useful brain cells I have left . I've already been trying to figure this out for a couple days now. I think I ended up with a cruddy burner.

Wow..... all I see are the emoticons..... But if it turns out your burner is bad, I think they're about $80 for a dual layer burner at newegg.com. Im sure the regular burners are cheaper than that...Hope its useful.. _________________

Well, it came w/ my new PC, and it DID work just fine until a few days ago. I have a warranty and stuff, but eh...I'm trying to avoid taking it in if I have to.
It seems to fail on every data DVD I try to make, but sometimes it works when I make a copy of a DVD half of the time, if I lower the speed. CD's burn with no problem though. Here's the stats in case anyone's interested or went through this with an NEC ND-1300a:
Nero 5.5 installed (installed this 2 months ago, worked fine w/ cd's, hadn't tried dvd's until Roxio was failing)
Roxio 6 installed (came preinstalled, yuck)
firmware 1.07 (flashed it last night to 1.09, no difference so far, dunno how to roll back to 1.07, I probably can't )
DMA enabled
In Roxio: burn fails around 93% or just before leadout. "Unspecified error".
In Nero: Gets stuck for 2+ minutes and fails at 1% saying "Illegal disk error, error reading data, burn failed".
Everyone's telling me I'm using cheap/bad media. Well, if that's so, then why did it work the other day? I'm using the same spools. Fails on Fuji, Verbatim, and Ridata (ritek g04) if burning data disk. No changes were made prior to the problem, which is why I can't pinpoint the problem.
Oddly enough, last night my speeds in Roxio started being listed as 1.9x (2.6mb/s) and 3.9x (5.2mb/s) rather than 2x and 4x, not it's for every disk
I've been told these are possible problems: Nero and Roxio conflicting w/ each other (but both have been working for months now), burner dying (heh?? this thing is 4 months old!), firmware. I'll keep reading....but it makes me even more confused If worse comes to worst, I'll just start burning a ton of CD's to back things up then take it in to be checked

I'm still guessing its the media brand. from what you mentioned, it looks like it has trouble writing the last part of the tracks. So, I guess if the data you are writing is small, there a chance it wont fail since it doesnt have to write to the problem tracks. Usually if it can write successfully on a lower speed but fails on higher speed setting, the problem is on the media. Anyway, one thing to do to fix the problem is to update the firmware but unless its the official firmware, it might ruin your warranty. The unofficial firmwares do support more cheap medias though... _________________
-Have you disabled IMAPI on your system? If not try this (from Adobe's website).
10. Disable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.
If Adobe Premiere Pro returns an error that the DVD burner is in use by another application, disable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.
Note: Disabling the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service disables the ability of Windows XP to natively burn CD-R/RWs.
To disable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service:
1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
2. Double-click Services.
3. Right-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service and choose Properties.
4. Choose Disabled from the Startup Type menu.
5. Click Start, and then click OK.
Try to export an Adobe Premiere Pro project to DVD. If you're able to do so without error, you can reenable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. To reenable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, repeat steps 1-5, choosing Automatic from the Startup Type menu in step 4.
-have you installed anything new recently that might have changed a core driver needed for DVD burning?
-How much disk cache do you have? Check to make sure you have enough temp cahce space (since the programs can still store temp files on your system during the burn.
-Have you tried defragmenting and error checking your system to make sure that your files are optimized and that you don't have any disk errors at all?
