Like pretty much everything and anything, TV does more harm than good if only you abuse it.
(1 possible example: If you rely on TV to "babysit" and teach "morale" to your children because you're too lazy to do so yourself)

Exams should not be abolished because how else will you be able to "test" your skills? More or less, to see what you've learned and how you grew in the particular area being tested.

I'm with Aho on this:

If you spend time watching crap like Survivor and other mentally-challenged reality-based shows, then it's a waste of your time and you'll grow up to be a house plant.

As much as I hated exams in school, they're a necessary evil. I don't think exams that force you to memorize tiny facts really help you in the long run (especially in college)... I believe that open-book exams which test your analytical abilities contribute much more to the learning process... Big Grin

TV does more harm than good - Agree, however it depends on how you define "harm". I think the most important thing for people is to socialize and communicate in-person. I categorize TV with e-mail, the web, and any other medium that develops a person into a state where he is incapable of socializing with others outside of his home. I think a lot of technical people have this problem, and I see it a lot on on-line chat rooms and message boards. slashdot-org is a perfect example... Lot of people on there have short fuses, and are quick to flame others. If these people communicate the SAME way at their workplace or at a social event, they're going to find themselves in a dark alley with stab wounds in the back.

Exams should be abolished - Hell ya!!!! I hate exams! Aside from what you're being examed on, taking exams is a skill in itself. People who are good at memorizing things, or are able to write good answers to essay questions are usually good at taking exams. It doesn't mean they know the material, it just means they're good at taking exams.

Exams create two problems... First, people who are excellent at taking exams may not be qualified to be an authority at whatever they're being examed on. Second, people who are great at whatever subject it is may not actually be great at taking exams. Taking exams is a snapshot of a person. The person could have a bad headache, broke up with a loved one, or just about anything that isn't related to the exam's subject matter. If he took the exam the next day, the results could be entirely different.

Perfect example is IT certifications... Certifications like MCSE, CNE, CCNA, etc. is losing credibility because of the methodology used when issuing these exams. The questions given in these exams are in themselves problematic... People who know English as a second language will have a problem, or people who have 10-plus years experience will have a problem. However, if you spend a full week cramming with books like Exam Cram and the dozen or so web sites that have the question pools, you're almost guaranteed a passing score (I should know - I passed my MCSE 2000 with only five total errors out of all seven exams). The ONLY certification that has credibility is Cisco's CCIE, which is what I have... It costs $10,000 for the package (room/board, labs, travel, etc.) And, pass/fail is based in a lab environment, where you are given some challenges you must solve in a given amount of time. Creativity, rational and reasoning skills are heavily utilized in a lab situation, much much different from just a plain old exam.

If I had to choose the TYPE of exam, I'd choose essay-style exams or lab-style exams.

TV doing harm is a subjective thing. My personal belif is that reality TV does alot of harm. But there are also knowledge programs that you can learn stuff from and those are pretty good. Not that I actually watch TV at all nowdays it's just another piece of furniture.

But it's also a different between tv nowdays and TV when i was younger. Then I was younger there was alot more of the information based programs. But nowdays it's all reality shows. I dont udnerstand how anyoen can like that crap honestly.

Exams are kinda of a necessary evil. The good things about them is that you can just take the exam and those pass. So if you already knwos the subject you dont need to spend meaningless time in a schoolroom hearing stuff you already knew..

I don't know how it's like in other countries, but in Germany there are from 11.00h - 16.00h only reality shows (they harm badly) and the rest of the program isn't funny too. That's why I do not really often watch TV.

Exams are necessary but they suck. In about three months I must pass a few exams and I'm a little bit afraid. Hope, it will be good.

exam should not be abolished for sure... it is important! , the education system MUST be improved.. the system should not be exam-oriented...
we must include other activities such as class activities as part of the exam.. let say 50% written exam and 50% is the mark for other activities... so that we can identified students who are well verse in term of academic & school activities. so the point here is the exam should not be abolished but should be improved

for the tv ... it is subjective.. if you are watching discovery channel, animal planet or education channel then it is good because there are soooo many knowledge in it. but I think now, most of the people are more into entertainment.. so the tv sure bring harm more than good..
the parents should control their children entertainment is entertainment study is study so if you are balancing this two things so ... no problem!

that's all.. sorry for the imperfect english Wink

I'd love to visit most any asian country takuya Lovey Eyes I just love asia in general...
Anyways loveless the problem is I'm working right now i don't have time for college or really any requisites really because i took the profficiency test and dropped out of highschool so all i have is something equivalent to a highschool diploma... best bet is community college i suppose.
I live up here in malibu and she goes to school at UCI along with her boyfriend ( Angry ) so right now i'm looking at seeing her maybe once a month because i don't have a car or license right now (at least a month till my license) PLUS as i've said she says i need to get over her and i think i agree... for now... i really won't meet a girl as great as her anytime soon so i guess i'm just waiting for them to break up eh? (horrible horrible thought i know) so there ya go! you really hit the nail on head with that life is way different than drama though... sad really hehe
