When I saw "an American name" that is for the benefit of non-Americans or non-UK folks. Names like John, Matt, Thomas, David, etc.

And EVERYONE of my customers has written the furigana part in katakana.

Actually the real rule is that if the word "furigana" itself is written in Hiragana you're also supposed to write your furigana in Hiragana and if the word "furigana" is written in Katakana you're supposed to write your furigana in Katakana.

Even many Japanese don't know that.

Who knew?

Though, I suppose with nearly 80% of the forms (bank, new membership cards, etc.) being written with "furigana" in katakana, everyone has taken to that method. Sweat

Very interesting, indeed.
Actually, come to think of it, the furigana part on the card is written in katakana.

it can mean a multiple of things. can you write the kanji of the word instead of the romanji?

I'm pretty sure the "ai" is love, but we need to see what kanji the "ra" is.

Quite the contrary, the names of the three Aira's I know don't have 'love' in their name: , , .

In Jim Breen's Enamdict Aira as a given name is spelled

The dictionary indicates the other spellings are surnames or place names. I have no idea how accurate that is ...

Why don't you enable your comp to be able to type and read Japanese fonts?

If you're using Windows, go to "Control Panel", click on "Date, Time, and Regional Options".
Then click "Add Other Languages". Click on the "Languages" tab on the pop up.
Click on "Details". Then click on "Add". Use the 'drop down box' and scroll to "Japanese". Then click "Ok" after doing so.
That will enable you to type in Japanese.

Next (after all that is finished), 'right click' and go to "encoding". On the list of languages, go to "Japanese (Shift- JIS).

Viola.
